{"id":6842,"date":"2011-11-05T09:55:34","date_gmt":"2011-11-05T17:55:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/etec522sept11\/?p=6842"},"modified":"2011-11-05T10:11:28","modified_gmt":"2011-11-05T18:11:28","slug":"discussion-3-ipad-content-authoring-vs-media-consumption","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/etec522sept11\/2011\/11\/05\/discussion-3-ipad-content-authoring-vs-media-consumption\/","title":{"rendered":"Discussion #3 &#8211; iPad: Content authoring vs. media consumption"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Q: Do you think that the ipad lacks \u2018information production\u2019 \u2013 the word processing capability that we are used to on PCs?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.imsglobal.org\/articles\/nov2010iPad.cfm\" target=\"_blank\">Rob Abel<\/a>\u2019s article includes several interesting insights and information regarding the growing use of the iPad device in education.\u00a0 It is unfortunate that despite IMF\u2019s K-20 range Abel article only seems to be discussing tertiary examples and data.<\/p>\n<p>Nevertheless, it is clear that the iPad is certainly having an effect in education but, as it is at the beginning stages, it is difficult to predict where it will go.\u00a0 iPads will evolve; apps will evolve.\u00a0 Think about the first school-based computers and the first applications, CD-ROMs, early dial-up Internet access in schools, Web 1.0 and 2.0, and so on\u2026 These changes continue and so will changes with the iPad and iPad apps.<\/p>\n<p>With that context in mind, I would like to address the purported lack of \u2018information production\u2019 apps such as word processing, or, perhaps these are better defined as PC-like authoring apps.<\/p>\n<p>First, let me take a quick inventory.\u00a0 I have my iPad in front of me right now.\u00a0 I create content on my iPad 2 all the time:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Evernote<\/strong> \u2013 I take notes during meetings using this app.\u00a0 It syncs to all my devices.\u00a0 The app is updated regularly with new features.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Camera<\/strong> \u2013 I take pictures all the time, especially during meetings or conferences, of documents and other things that I add to Evernote.\u00a0 I take pictures of my family, too.\u00a0 I can record <strong>video<\/strong>, too!<\/li>\n<li><strong>Keynote<\/strong> \u2013 I create presentations.\u00a0 I use one of the built in themes, double-tap to edit, add content, and I am done.\u00a0 It does tables, charts and shapes.\u00a0 And I can add media, too.<\/li>\n<li><strong>iMovie<\/strong> \u2013 Wow. Video, photos and music \u2013 I can access them all, tap and drag into my movie timeline.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Pages<\/strong> \u2013 includes pre-made themes.\u00a0 I add photos and content and I am done quickly.\u00a0 No, I probably won\u2019t use Pages for my thesis or to lay out the school yearbook, but all my day-to-day stuff, yes!<\/li>\n<li><strong>GarageBand<\/strong> \u2013 whoever designed this app is to blame for my many periods of procrastination.\u00a0 This iPad app is even better than the iMac version, in my opinion.\u00a0 You can create songs from scratch that sound professional and they are fun to make.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Popplet<\/strong> \u2013 this is my app for planning events or lessons.\u00a0 It is really a concept mapping tool but it has so many uses.\u00a0 It\u2019s main advantage \u2013 simplicity.<\/li>\n<li><strong>VoiceThread<\/strong> \u2013 this new app is great especially since flash does not run on the iPad yet.\u00a0 Now I can create VTs on my iPad as well as the web interface.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div style=\"width: 342px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"  \" src=\"http:\/\/www.downloadatoz.com\/resources\/201012\/17\/imgs\/apple-ipad-pages_500x318.jpg\" alt=\"iPad - Pages\" width=\"332\" height=\"212\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Pages app for iPad<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Part of the content authoring vs. media consumption confusion arises from the assumption that the iPad is comparable hardware to a PC.\u00a0 There is a fair amount of functional overlap which, I think, contributes to some of this confusion.\u00a0 I think it is unlikely that the PC will disappear any time soon.\u00a0 I do think that households with multiple PCs are going to disappear.\u00a0 I think we are heading towards a model of one PC per household, and one PC per classroom; the model will also include multiple mobile devices used as the day-to-day device.<\/p>\n<p>Anyway, I think the question of the authoring capabilities of the iPad vs. a PC is a very short-sited discussion.\u00a0 Getting down to the nitty-gritty of it all, it comes down to the combination of apps plus the design intention of the device in question. iPads are mobile devices and the apps will match that intention.\u00a0 PCs are desktop devices. iPads were never designed to replace PCs.\u00a0 Nevertheless, I am constantly surprised as the powerful authoring apps that are becoming available.<\/p>\n<p>It also comes down to time. Currently, iPads probably are used mostly as information and media consumption devices. But there is a growing need and now a growing developer response of authoring apps options.\u00a0 But don\u2019t look for apps that match the PC apps.\u00a0 I am not saying this as a cop out.\u00a0 I am saying that because the iPad and the PC are different devices.<\/p>\n<p>Here are a few relevant discussions I have read and found useful:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.imsglobal.org\/articles\/nov2010iPad.cfm\" target=\"_blank\">Content Creation v.s. You don&#8217;t need Microsoft Word to take notes at a meeting or make a shopping list.\u00a0 And you don&#8217;t need\u00a0 AutoCAD to sketch out landscaping plans for a backyard.\u00a0 Most day-to-day tasks can be accomplished with a light weight iPad app.\u00a0 Was it Steve Jobs who said this?\u00a0 &#8230;something to the effect of: PCs will eventually become the workhorse device, only used for very large and\/or complex projects.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Q: Do you think that the ipad lacks \u2018information production\u2019 \u2013 the word processing capability that we are used to on PCs?
