Hi! I’m Megan Ravenhill

I am currently teaching in the Saanich School District, which resides on the W̱SÁNEĆ traditional territory. Although I graduated with a Bachelor of Education with a focus on English and Physical Education, I am currently teaching Math and Science to grade 8 students. I am pleasantly surprised at how much I have been enjoying subjects that I am not fully confident in teaching. I have accepted the challenge and have surprised myself throughout the process!

This is my fourth semester in the MET program, in which I am taking two courses this term. I hope to have the MET program completed by December 2022. I am looking forward to this course, especially because we will be able to use content and posts long after the program is over. I wish there was an archive option for CANVAS so we can use the information for further studies or within our practice.

Beyond the program, my interests involve living an active and healthy lifestyle (soccer, hiking, running, and skiing). Additionally, I love all animals, especially dogs.

I am looking forward to working and learning with this cohort this term! All the best to everyone this semester!

Hey Megan! Congratulations on being so close to finishing your MET degree. I have to agree with you that one of the aspects of the course I appreciate is the accessibility we will have to our course contributions, post August. Looking forward to working with you!

W̱SÁNEĆ traditional territory was new to me, so I took the time to explore its history, territory, and legends. The hiking trails look stunning.

Hi Elizabeth! The hikes are beautiful around here, especially a specific one named “mount work” or “squally reach”

I’ve checked out the two that you mentioned, plus a few more, There seems to be a wide choice. I have not yet been to the island, but might be on a future visit to BC now that restrictions have lessened.

Hello Megan! As you mention, it is always nice to take on new challenges, step into the unknown, and learn. I think this course will be a lot like that given its unique format :). I like soccer too and I am thrilled that Canada has made it to the World Cup – can’t wait to see them there!

Hi Megan, there is a downloadable option with Canvas so you can archive the courses when you are finished. Let me know if that’s of interest for you. I look forward to working with you.

      Hi Jennifer!

I had no idea there was that option! I’d love to figure that out if you are willing to share!

Hi Megan, your answer to the challenge must have brought you joy and incredible growth in you. I find your story fascinating and encouraging. Interested to know, what have you found most helpful to engage with students well in virtual classrooms?

      Hi Zheng!

I find routines to be the most helpful way to engage students. I worked for a remote learning program September 2021 to December 2021. During our synchronous virtual class times, I would always start with a question of the day and a small warmup activity so students knew what to expect each day!

Thanks Megan, your strategy of building personal connections via virtual community sounds like a success to me!

I also started off teaching a subject which I wasn’t familiar with, can definitely relate to the learning process. Agree with you about Canvas lacking an option to archive course content (I guess using Slack and UBC Blogs last semester spoilt me a bit), it’s a shame to see quality work/discussion comments disappear once the semester ends. Maybe that’s exact what Mobile learning needs, an option to save/backup content! Soccer is good fun though I’m terrible at it (don’t expect me to be able to dribble the ball in a straight line)

      Hi John!

I recently joined slack for 511! I am looking forward to getting to learn the platform as I never have used it before.
