These are videos between 30 minutes to 2 hours or even longer of youtubers just quietly studying. Here is <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/dmDbesougG0\">an example<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The content is simple \u2013 people preparing for an exam on video while people watch. Some are broadcast live while some are recorded. Surprisingly, these simple videos received millions of views on YouTube. The top \u201cstudy with me\u201d video has over 5 million views now! I found this Business Insider video a great, short explanation of what \u201cstudy with me\u201d videos are about and why they are popular.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Why People Watch YouTubers Study For Hours\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ixCW2YzSVAQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To summarize, the main benefits of these videos are to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Reduce loneliness of studying<\/li><li>Motivate viewers to study<\/li><li>Increase concentration <\/li><li>Boost confidence<\/li><li>Serve as a built-in focus timer<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In short, \u201cstudy with me\u201d videos offers virtual companionship to keep viewers motivated. I think that mobile culture has made virtual companionship possible, more accessible, and more accepted. People have turned to videos for companionship. I find it interesting that despite the ability to access mobile resources anymore and at anytime, many people still seek some form of human companionship for solitary tasks, even if it\u2019s through an online video.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWith me\u201d videos are not new and have been around since 2010 (Youtube Culture &amp; Trends, 2020). According to <a href=\"https:\/\/youtube.com\/trends\/articles\/with-me-interactive\/\">YouTube Culture &amp; Trends<\/a>, \u201cStudy with me\u201d video views really took off in 2018. With the COVID pandemic, the need to stay connected virtually has caused a surge in popularity of these videos. Views of videos with \u201cstudy with me\u201d titles in the US increased by 54% compared to this time last year (Southern, 2020). Not only are \u201cwith me\u201d videos popular for studying, they\u2019ve also become popular in other fields like cooking, shopping, cleaning and exercising. During COVID, there has been a 600% increase in daily views of videos with \u201c#withme\u201d titles since March 15<sup>th <\/sup>(Alexander,2020). Sometimes these &#8220;withme&#8221; videos serve more as a tutorial for DIY learning. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cStudy with me\u201d videos are a transhuman means of companionship to increase focus.
