{"id":8078,"date":"2021-11-27T15:16:27","date_gmt":"2021-11-27T22:16:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/etec523\/?p=8078"},"modified":"2021-11-27T15:33:34","modified_gmt":"2021-11-27T22:33:34","slug":"a3-pathways-to-purpose","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/etec523\/2021\/11\/27\/a3-pathways-to-purpose\/","title":{"rendered":"A3 &#8211; Pathways to Purpose"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cPathways to Purpose\u201d is imagined (and presented) as an app. in the video below, but it is, perhaps, more important to recognize that <strong>the idea represents a re-orientation of learning<\/strong> and exploration to feed an individual\u2019s purpose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Born from a mashup of ideas explored throughout the course: primarily self-directed\/DIY learning, artificial intelligence, and mental wellness; it is an attempt to imagine how individuals might explore OER for personal fulfillment \u2013 to help \u201cfill the empty space inside oneself\u201d that many feel in the 21st century.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s a bit philosophically lofty, I know. Personally, I\u2019ve never felt that I have a singular, organizational purpose to my life, and it\u2019s increasingly difficult, I think, to separate and understand the relationships between:<br>\u2022 What we are <strong>good at<\/strong><br>\u2022 What <strong>we enjoy<\/strong> doing<br>\u2022 What can <strong>earn a living<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These are important questions for everyone to consider, yet often they are considered too infrequently and haphazardly. Given the vast amount of information, experts, and experiences we have access to, it should be easier than ever to parse a purpose out of life \u2013 and yet, it is not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The idea is more than a \u2018career counselling\u2019 or \u2018upskilling\u2019 app., of which there are many, though it may contain some elements of each.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We are already subject to highly advanced <em>recommender<\/em> algorithms that maximize for our attention (Wang, 2020) \u2013 Why not, instead, program a system to maximize for purpose?
