Evaluating Websites:
According to a CBC news report published in 2013, Canadians ranked first in the number of web pages viewed and second in the amount of time spent online. CBC reported that the average Canadian internet user was online for 41.3 hours per month and viewed on average 3,731 pages each month. Of the 25.5 million internet users in Canada at the time of the report, nearly 100 percent were online every day! Let’s stop and think about what we feel makes a website good, or what makes a website bad. Why do we stay on a particular site…why do we leave sites?
Activity 1
The class will be divided into groups to discuss the various aspects of what they like or don’t like about web sites.
The task within each group is to build a rubric outlining the various elements that each of you feels is important to good website design.
In order to help each group along, the following questions may help:
- What elements make a website good
- What makes you leave a website quickly
- Is there agreement within the group for each element
- Does anyone disagree? If so, explain
- Are certain websites geared to particular audiences?
- If so, could a websites quality be judged differently across those audiences
During the allotted time, each group will prepare their rubric. One person from each group will be chosen randomly to present their groups rubric to the class.
