I have absolutely zero experience or knowledge in music, so this task poses a real challenge to me. After listening to the 20000mHz podcast, I felt that each track and a lot more tracks are curate worthy. I believe that the songs sent interstellarly must be able to represent and encompass human history, uniqueness, and art. By human uniqueness, I particularly would like to point out language, complex social lives and emotions, and the ability to express concrete things into abstract ideas. Therefore, the following is the list of 10 songs that I would curate:
- Bach, Brandenburg Concerto No. 2 in F. First Movement, Munich Bach Orchestra, Karl Richter, conductor. 4:40: classic and composed by one of the most brilliant composers in the human history. Mathematical foundation.
- Java, court gamelan, “Kinds of Flowers,” recorded by Robert Brown. 4:43: philosophical thinking
- Senegal, percussion, recorded by Charles Duvelle. 2:08: human history and old tradition (Percussion is very old)
- “Johnny B. Goode,” written and performed by Chuck Berry. 2:38: Modern (in 1977) and popular rock music
- Japan, shakuhachi, “Tsuru No Sugomori” (“Crane’s Nest,”) performed by Goro Yamaguchi. 4:51: abstract thinking, old tradition
- Mozart, The Magic Flute, Queen of the Night aria, no. 14. Edda Moser, soprano. Bavarian State Opera, Munich, Wolfgang Sawallisch, conductor. 2:55: classic and composed by one of the most brilliant composers in the human history
- Georgian S.S.R., chorus, “Tchakrulo,” collected by Radio Moscow. 2:18: chorus, a historical legacy of humankind.
- Beethoven, Fifth Symphony, First Movement, the Philharmonia Orchestra, Otto Klemperer, conductor. 7:20: classic and composed by one of the most brilliant composers in the human history
- Peru, wedding song, recorded by John Cohen. 0:38: wedding and marriage, the foundation of human society
- China, ch’in, “Flowing Streams,” performed by Kuan P’ing-hu. 7:37: abstract thinking, old tradition.
I only leave one space for all-time greatest classic composers – Bach, Beethoven, and Mozart because of the space limit.
I listened to the entire collections. Some tribal music is simply beyond my ability of comprehension. I had a hard time discerning their qualities and meanings, so I haven’t included much.
