When curating songs for the Golden Record on the Voyager mission, it is important to me that I include songs from various cultures around the world. In addition, I would want to choose pieces that each have a different sound to them so that some may travel further than others or be more recognizable than others. As a result, I would choose the following 10 tracks from the original 27 selections:
- Greetings From Earth – I would keep this track on the Golden Record because it plays several of the languages we speak on Earth and increases the chance of someone else hearing this record and understanding it. In addition, if another lifeform does not speak the same language as us, at least they will be able to hear what some of our languages sound like as you can easily tell it is a voice recording.
- Bach WTK 2, no. 1 – I would keep this track because it is a great example of classical music. In addition, the various tones (and frequencies) of the different piano keys might be heard better than a voice.
- Tchakrulo – Choir – This piece would remain on the Golden Record because it represents a collective voice. It also has a steady deep undertone throughout the song giving it a sense of having strong roots.
- Panpipes and Drum Song– This song is a great combination of high and low pitched music. The upbeat, fast pace makes this song seem cheerful, which is a feeling I would want others to have when encountering these sounds.
- Melancholy Blues – I would keep this track on the Golden Record because it provides a new sound of the range of instruments we have on Earth. The brass instruments sound much different than the previous voices or drums.
- Johnny B Goode – Chuck Berry – This song would be kept on the Golden Record for personal reasons. Songs in this style have been used in dance competitions for as long as I can remember. As a result, music like Johnny B Goode always makes me want to get up and dance! Hopefully it would have the same effect on whomever (or whatever) heard it playing.
- Jaat Kahan Ho – India – Surshri: This track would be kept because as I stated earlier, I would want to ensure that music from a range of cultures and time periods was kept on the Golden Record. This piece fits that criteria and also has a pleasant sound to it.
- Flowing Streams – China: I really like the symbolism in this musical track and the stringed instrument is one that I have not included in other tracks.
- Tchenhoukoumen, percussion Senegal – This piece has a wide range of percussion instruments that have also not been included in previous tracks. In addition, the upbeat tempo of this song has a positive vibe to it that would hopefully portray humankind as being positive beings.
- Cranes In Their Nest – Japan: I would choose this track because it is a very calm and soothing musical track. I am not sure if lifeforms from another planet would associate this song with nature, but this track allows me to visualize a beautiful natural world. Ideally, this song would help others imagine a beautiful place where it originated from.
