Be it sewing, crochet, paper craft, writing, or even puzzles, I have always found a need to make something.

I hold a Bachelor’s degree in biology with the University of Waterloo where I learned the basics of laboratory work and research paper writing. My Master’s degree in biology at McGill University helped hone my skills in time management and critical thinking. My professional work lay mostly in the biotechnology sector; an experience that gave me insight into accountability and teamwork in the workplace. The research, writing, planning, and collaboration from my academic and professional experience have been brought together in a science education career.

My career has been through informal education to school-aged children. The TBLS will add to my repertoire of outreach methods. I believe this certificate will equip me with tools to improve my effectiveness as an educational designer.

I have created science programming for children in the classroom, for public audiences, and for visitors to amusement parks. I have field experience eliciting amazement and excitement about science in children, teens and adults. I have presented teaching techniques to my peers at conferences, and led international-collaborations to improve the content in our programming.

At Mad Science, I performed experiments, and then produced a manual for instructors around the world to provide the experience. I believe that various methods of online technology can help me train the instructor and expand the child’s interest in science.

My company is a franchise business. Our franchisees look to our department to help them stay at the forefront of science education. I have participated in several satellite projects in response to their technological requests. I have moderated an online children’s science forum, delved into the production of DIY science experiment videos, created multimedia presentations, and posted video blogs, all for science outreach! With each digital experience, I am more certain that there is information that I have yet to gain, that would help me become a better leader in technology-based education.

I am a researcher, and I looked to the available online education system to locate a suitable course that could empower me. I found the Technology-Based Learning in Schools certificate offered by the University of British Columbia. I would gain the knowledge I feel I am currently searching for by following this program. I appreciate how this course provides forums for its students. I hope to develop a network of fellow tech-based educators upon completion of this certificate.

I think, I dream, I draft, I create, I modify, I am a Maker The Maker movement was a realization of all that I do.
