\u201cEmojis are pictograms and seem to transform the movie plot into visual poetry. While the original media was a form of visual representation, the expressed ideas were not intended to be reduced to poetry. Not relying on syllables, I attempted to reduce the plot to the simplest set of icons and while working out the structure nearly created a haiku (too many parts and images).\u201d Ben Z.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The idea Ben brought up of visual poetry\u00a0in his Task 6: A<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>90s<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>emoji story intrigued me.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>When I went to describe my plot, I tried my hardest to break it down into the absolute most essential pieces that needed to be said and then \u201ctranslate\u201d them into emojis;\u00a0<\/span>we didn\u2019t seem that far off.\u00a0 But the poetry aspect… it reminded\u00a0me of a game I had purchased recently (COVID times = a multitude of family board games in\u00a0<\/span>the Patton household) called \u201cPoetry for Neanderthals\u201d.\u00a0 The premise is that you must get your partner to guess\u00a0<\/span>a word or phrase by describing it using only one syllable words;\u00a0<\/span>reduce your hints to their simplest forms.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>I\u00a0<\/span>believe<\/span>\u00a0that th<\/span>is<\/span>\u00a0is what emojis seem to do in text conversation at present;\u00a0they take complex ideas and emotions\u00a0<\/span>and reduce<\/span>\u00a0and represent them with simple visual representations.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0Now, I\u2019m not saying that they do th<\/span>is one hundred percent<\/span>\u00a0successfully, or that they will become a fluid next language for future generations,\u00a0<\/span>but, like the one syllable words in the game, they tend to get their point across\u00a0<\/span>a majority of<\/span>\u00a0the time.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>And sometimes what they are saying can be\u00a0seen as a basic visual poetry.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I also agree with Ben\u2019s statement, \u201cEmoji-mediated language use for this context seems less concise to me than the written or spoken word.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>Face to face conversations and descriptive written texts are still superior methods of communicating\u00a0<\/span>which\u00a0allow\u00a0subtle grammatical and emotional \u201cfootprints\u201d\u00a0<\/span>to be interpreted by the reader\/listener.\u00a0 But, as times change and we have less and less \u201cface-time\u201d with individuals and more and more\u00a0<\/span>communication through quick text blasts, I see emojis not becoming a language unto themselves, but rather a more symbiotic partner in our communications<\/span>.\u00a0 I think we already see this transformation happening with the advent of a GIFs option on most keyboards as well as emojis.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>The application of visual representations to augment thoughts, emotions, and ideas is something I believe will only flourish as we forward with technology.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
