You walk into the lab on a Monday morning. As it is a Monday, choose the appropriate state you find yourself in:
* [[You have not had enough sleep->Sleepy - dark solution]], because you binge-watched all seven seasons of //Star Wars–The Clone Wars//, and barely manaaged to dress yourself in time to get here.
* [[You have had four cups of coffee->Caffinated - dark solution]] already.(set: $drinkkmno4 to false)On the lab bench is a dark-coloured solution in a beaker. What are your thoughts?(set: $sleepy to true)
* "That looks like it might be coffee. [[I could really use a coffee.->Drink dark solution]]"
* "I don't know what that is. [[I wonder if there is a label on it->Read Label]]."(set: $drinkkmno4 to false)You see a dark-coloured solution in a beaker. What are your thoughts?(set: $caffine to true)
* "That might be coffee. I've already had four cups this morning, but [[one more would be good->Drink dark solution]]."
* "I don't know what that is. [[I wonder if there is a label on it?->Read Label]]"You desperately grab the beaker with two unstable hands, and down the solution in one, long, slow quaff. As you put down the empty beaker, you see a label. [[You read the label->Read Label]].
(set: $drinkkmno4 to true)The label reads
''"KMnO(text-style:"subscript")[4] 2.5 //M//"''
(if:$drinkkmno4)[[["Hmm."->Did drink]]]
(else:)[[["Hmm."->didn't drink]]]
"Oh, no. I think potassium permanganate is poisonous. I'll just go lie over here and die a slow and agonizing death."
[[restart->Intro - sleepy or caffinated?]]Wow! That's poisonous! Good thing you didn't drink that.
There are two other solutions on the table, one of which is blue, the other clear. The beakers are both labelled "water". You feel intensely thirsty.You reach for one of the beakers:
* [[The blue flavour of sports drinks is your favourite.->blue]]
* [[Water isn't blue->clear]].You vaguely remember your teacher mentioning something about blue things in chemistry labs.
* [["Nuts, I can't remember."->drink blue]]
* [["Right! I remember now."->dont drink blue]]
* You decide to [[drink the water->drink clear]].
* You decide to not drink the water, and [[wander over to another bench->next bench]].As you swallow the last of the rather disgusting-tasting blue solution, you then recall the words of your teacher:
(text-colour:yellow)["
#Don't drink anything blue! Many blue compounds are copper compounds, and all copper comounds are toxic."]
Afterwards, you crawl over to the corner of the room and die a slow and painful death.
[[restart->Intro - sleepy or caffinated?]]
#"Don't Drink Anything Blue!"
You recall that many blue compounds are copper compounds, and all copper compounds are toxic. Good thing you didn't drink it.
You put down the blue solution and consider picking up the clear solution:
* [[Pick up the clear.->clear]]
* [[Wander over to another bench.->next bench]]On this bench, there are: a grey powder, an orange-brown powder, a stip of thin metal that might be magnesium, a lighter, and a plastic petri dish.
You have the thought "I wonder what would happen if I mixed those two powders together, then put the magnesium strip into the powders, and lit the magnesium?"
(if:$sleepy is true)[
* You are still a bit sleepy, but perhaps [[doing a little experiment->light]] will wake you up.
* You are still so sleepy, you can't be bothered to mix anything together. The chair in the corner looks like a good place for a [[nap->nap]].]
(else:)[
* Quickly, you dump both powders into the petri dish, jab in the magnesium strip, and [[light the magnesium->light]] using the lighter.
* Your hands are so shaky from the caffine that you spill all the powder trying to put it in the petri dish. You decide to go out to the running track for a [[quick 5k run->run]] to calm down.]After your nap, you awake refreshed and recall all the safety instuctions you learned last week. You will have a successful lab class today!

The resulting highly-exothermic reaction ignites the bench on fire. In your caffine-addled state, you cannot decide whether to grab the fire blanket and smother the fire, grab the sand bucket to smother the fire, grab the fire extinguisher to use on the fire, or run out to the hall to pull the fire alarm. So you try to do all four things at once, trip on the blanket, and are knocked unconcious–for only a little while, though until the smoke from the fire suffocates you. Your last thought before losing consciousness is
#(text-colour:yellow)["Always ask permission before performing any experiment."]

#Congratulations! You have passed the lab safety quiz!
[[restart->Intro - sleepy or caffinated?]]<video src="videos/h2o2.mov" width="640" height="480" autoplay></video>
The clear liquid was a 30% soution of hydrogen peroxide, and the catalase enzyme in the lining of your esophagus and stomach started a rapid decomposition of the hydrogen peroxide. The reaction produced a large vollume of oxygen gas, which caused you to vomit out large amounts of foamy liquid, much like in the video. The heat produced by this exothermic reaction burns the lining of your esophagus, and you will have to be fed via a feeding tube for the rest of your life.
#(text-colour:yellow)[Never taste anything in the lab.]
