Task 6: An Emoji Story

Task 6 Reflection:

This task initially created the difficult challenge of condensing an entire plot into a few emoticons. In order to portray the plot effectively, I focused on utilizing ideas and symbols. In my opinion, symbols are easier to interpret because of their generic  imagery. The reader would be able to see a simple emoticon such as, ???? and assume it means to smile or be happy. As Bolter mentions (2001), imagery and visuals are increasingly important in order to convey ideas or text. Especially with movies, the filmography plays a critical role in telling the story.

In this task, I began with the title. There are important symbols and themes throughout the plot that can be identified within the title. Therefore, I found it to play an important role in the emoji story. Furthermore, I chose a story from the most recent thing I watched/read so I did not consider the difficulty in the delivery of this plot. Overall, I believe readers will be able to identify the plot based on key symbols.

  1. I love this movie. The title made it easy to guess because you lucked out by having actual emojis that matched up with words in the title to a certain extant. I love your Bilbo/Frodo duo. (Trying hard not to give it away!) I had no idea emojis came in all ages.
    Great job Abe!

  2. I hardly believe that I could figure it out. Translation has always been hard for me and I am a die-hard word smith. What a good job you did.

    Thanks! Megs Keating

  3. I think I got it Abe! For me it helped that your title is very similar to mine (although a very different book/movie), and Ryan is right that you lucked out by having emojis that matched up to your title words. The interpretation makes more sense when it is a story that you are familiar with; I suppose that helps provide a ‘key’ as a reference point so we can better follow the train of thought of the author. I find it very difficult to figure out many of our classmates’ stories, it is trickier than anticipated.

  4. Hi Abraham, this is excellent! It took me a second, but using the crown and ring to symbolize the Lord of the Rings is great! I like how you used two lines to combine the whole plot of the three books/movies. The evil eye to symbolize Sauron was also a nice touch.

  5. Abe you had me going for awhile, I finally got it when I went to the last emoji! Good job! I didnt even know we had an exploding mountain volcano type emoji!
