For this task, we were asked to view the visualization posted in CLAS and reflect on the implications and outcomes.
Yes, it is true that, “The visualizations show not only connections between the participants’ music choices, but also groups participants based on the strength of these choices, creating communities of “like-minded” individuals.”
But how like-minded are we ?
I decided to look at the people who were like colours- (I will use initials) LH and DL.
LH, DL and I were green dots in the visualization. I decided to look into LH’s choices and DL’s choices. We had 2 songs in common – Peru-wedding song, and music by Bach. A common theme would be: diverse selection based on history and voice of both men and women.
I also had 6 different lines that branched out- they seemed to cross over with many classmates.
2 thoughts came to my mind after analyzing the visualization.
1) People are connected to one another- in this case the commonalities of music preferences that connects us as a whole. Even though we might think we are unique and have different ways of interpreting- we were woven altogether as one. But what does each colour represent?
2) It was interesting that there wasn’t a person selected to be in the middle- meaning, not a single person had something in common with everyone. The circle was separated by an inner circle and an outer circle that ultimately intertwined everyone together. What were the reasons for the 6 people placed in the inner circle, and the 12 people selected to be the outer circle?
