Task 5 – Twine Task
Overall, I really enjoyed learning how to use Twine for this assignment. The tutorial was easy to follow, and has so many links to coding that it was easy for me to follow due to my engineering background. I think that this is such a neat way to do storytelling, and can make links to the BC ADST curriculum because of the coding links. I think that there is so much potential with this application, and it has already given me some ideas to use in the classroom in the future!
For this task, I really wanted to take the player on a journey. As we are halfway through our school year, I am really craving a vacation. In my Twine creation, I’ve taken the player on two of my favourite travel destinations, Moab, Utah and Lake Tahoe, California. I let players choose their destination, while giving them options to change their minds and explore both at the end. In terms of the itinerary at both destinations, I wanted to highlight my favourite activities to do at each location and provide a description of what they could do at each. My partner and I love being outdoors and mountain biking, so a lot of the activities revolved around that. The example game attached to the task made me really excited to see the potential of Twine, so I was constantly testing my game and fixing any bugs or mistakes that I had. I think Twine is simple enough for anyone to use, but is also very open-ended that it allows for many possibilities to occur. My only critique was that I wished there was a way to change the font and upload photos, as I think it would have made my story come to life especially due to the nature of the content.
Hey Natalie,
First of all, kudos for taking on the Twine task, though I’ve discussed the potential of using Twine with various groups throughout my MET experience, I have yet to pull the trigger on it and so the task felt a bit overwhelming for me. I read your description first and got real amped up about your exploration of Utah as I’ll be headed there for the first time over Spring break.
That said, I think the link may be broken so I wasn’t able to check out your Twine. Sounds like you worked hard on it so it would be great to show off!
Hi Amy,
Thanks for the comment! I followed the assignment instructions for uploading, but you are right, I can’t open it myself when I try it out. Ernesto seemed to be able to do so when he marked mine, so I’ll ask him how he got around it. There doesn’t seem to be another way to download and upload it since it is browser saved.
I think I may have figured out another way to access it! Since what I uploaded was a zip file, if you right click the link and select “Save as”, it will save a copy to your computer and then you can view it that way. Hope that helps!
