Sarah’s Task 4

In Sarah’s assignment, I connected with a lot of the thoughts she shared as I experienced some of the same things as her. In the handwriting task, like Sarah, I don’t typically handwrite for extended periods of time. I found this task challenging as well in the sense that I didn’t have as much writing stamina as I used to due to the convenience and norm of typing. I had to take frequent breaks, which would interrupt my thoughts and flow of what I was writing.

Sarah goes on to discuss the advantage of typing in comparison to handwriting. With typing, you have the opportunity to rewrite and rearrange your ideas with ease. This reminded me of Lamb and McCormick’s podcast, where they discuss the significance of books. Books are a powerful vessel for sharing information and some were oftentimes banned, removed, or burned because they did not want certain information being known. They then go on to discuss oral storytelling and how memories can alter in your mind, and the story can be altered or embellished every time it is told (2020). This idea can be connected with using technology to type, as it is easy to edit the text through typing or speech to text before one publishes the final piece of writing. While convenient, the written piece could have changed numerous times to be curated to the author’s liking. However, typing can provide some benefits. For example, one can brainstorm their thoughts by utilizing bullet points to organize ideas before typing a paragraph. Google Docs and Microsoft Word provides spelling and grammar suggestions, which reduces the need to proofread writing in comparison to handwriting. There are a multitude of advantages to typing, but handwriting is a raw form of text creation, as one writes their initial thoughts on paper with the absence of editing.
