#6 Linking Assignment

Jennifer Li: Attention Economy

  • How has your colleague’s experience differed from yours? And how do you know?

Jenn’s experience with this task seems very similar to mine. I connect with several comments she made in her reflection. First of all, Jenn mentions that the activity was more frustrating than challenging and that, “as a person who has grown up using the internet and am still on it a lot, it was easy for me to see through the little tricks” (Jenn Li). I relate with this sentiment as I have also grown up using the internet. In the academic world, Jenn and I are labelled “digital natives” (Prensky, 2001). We have been surrounded by new technology our entire lives, whereas older generations, who are still learning and adopting new technology, are considered “digital immigrants” (Prensky, 2001). Digital immigrants would not only be dealing with navigating dark patterns, but also just using the technology could be a challenge for them! I wonder if the age of participants should be considered in order to get more accurate results? Jenn also mentions how she is aware that the internet is tailored to her interests. I agree with her. I am aware that if I search “kayaks” that I will be bombarded with ads for kayaks in my area. It doesn’t really bother me. However, digital immigrants might feel more targeted without understanding why or how.

I really appreciate Jenn’s screenshots to emphasize her frustrations with this activity. I think the images add to her explanations and highlight what she noticed as she worked through the task. Visuals were a great touch!

  • What web authoring tool have they chosen to manifest their work?

Jenn is using a WordPress blog which is also linked to her ETEC ePortfolio.

  • How does their tool differ from yours in the ways in which it allows content-authouring and end-user interface?

Jenn’s blog is neatly laid out with tabs at the top to help the user navigate. She also has a link to her ePortfolio, which is also very well organized! I like that you can comment on her posts for this course and explore her other coursework.

  • What literacies does their site privilege or deny in comparison and contrast to yours?

Jenn uses Bitmoji’s which add some flair to her blog! I like the different expressions she has chosen for her personal emoji.

  • What theoretical underpinnings are evident in your/your colleague’s textual architecture and how does this affect one’s experience of the work?

Jenn’s blog is very well organized and every post is accompanied with visuals which add personality to her web space.

  • How do the constraints of the course design manifest in your architectural choices? How have you responded to the pedagogical underpinnings of this course design in your own web space?

I appreciate that Jenn has linked her ETEC ePortfolio to this blog. It ties together her learning in this course and with her overall Masters.
