‘It’s broken.’<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Both of my narratives are inspired from \u201cThe Future of Digital Literacies\u201d podcast (2020). In the conversation, Doug Fisher describes how the multiple intelligences of Howard Gardner are dated and should be replaced with new intelligences; playground intelligence and technological intelligence.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

My first narrative explores playground intelligence. When studying this intelligence, scholars will ask the questions, \u201chow am I playing and how am I being played?\u201d (Fisher, 2020).<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
Cole<\/span><\/td>\n\u201cMOM! If I play outside can I get my iPad back? Puuuuulllleeease!!\u201d<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Mom<\/span><\/td>\n\u201cYou need some fresh air. You have been sitting all day. We will discuss iPad privileges in a bit. Go run around.\u201d<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Cole<\/span><\/td>\nInternal monologue:<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

\u201cGreat, what am I supposed to do out here? Get my hands dirty playing in the sand? Let\u2019s try this shiny\u00a0tall thing.\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

<\/td>\n*<\/span><\/i>Cole plants himself at the bottom of the slide*<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Cole<\/span><\/td>\nIt\u2019s broken. Now what?\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

\u201cMOM! Can you show me a YouTube video for using this thing?\u201d<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

Mom<\/span><\/td>\n\u201cPut those gaming tricks to good use sweetie! You can figure it out yourself!\u201d<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Cole<\/span><\/td>\n\u201cBut I\u2019m not gaming!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

What tricks can I use? Uggghhh! I\u2019m bored. Nothing is shooting at me or chasing me. I wish I had my VR headset.\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

Cole<\/span><\/td>\n\u201cI\u2019m coming back inside! I won\u2019t use my iPad, just my small robot.\u201d<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

Now this scenario might seem set more in the present than the future, however, in the future, scholars will be studying this behaviour as \u201cplayground intelligence.\u201d They will be looking at children’s\u2019 ability to remove themselves from the digital world and switch their brains to outside, imaginative play and problem solving. How do they adapt when they don\u2019t have an immediate answer to a question or a \u2018how to\u2019 video? Do they know how to transfer their knowledge from online to real life? And if they do, are they effective in doing so?<\/span><\/p>\n

My second narrative explores technological intelligence. Do students have the wisdom to evaluate digital content and its impact on them? (Fisher, 2020). As augmented reality becomes more prevalent in our educational sector, it will drive our desire to learn more.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
Eli<\/span><\/td>\n\u201cDad, like my new glasses?\u201d<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Dad<\/span><\/td>\n\u201cYeah! Stylish! I didn\u2019t know you needed glasses for school?\u201d<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Eli<\/span><\/td>\n\u201cI don\u2019t need them for seeing, I need them for learning\u201d<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Dad<\/span><\/td>\n\u201cWell, yeah. That\u2019s the point of them right? So you can see the board?\u201d<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Eli<\/span><\/td>\n\u201cWhat board?\u201d<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Dad<\/span><\/td>\n\u201cOh sorrrrrry\u2026. The projector.\u201d<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Eli<\/span><\/td>\n\u201cNo, I can see the projector just fine.\u201d<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Dad<\/span><\/td>\n\u201cThen why do you have glasses?\u201d<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Eli<\/span><\/td>\n\u201cFor my learning! Geezzzz!\u201d<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Dad\u00a0<\/span><\/td>\n\u201cI\u2019m lost.\u201d<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Eli<\/span><\/td>\n\u201cAsk me a question I don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Dad<\/span><\/td>\n\u201cWhat is the capital of Sweden?\u201d<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

In the future, scholars will be studying students\u2019 ability to gain wisdom with knowledge being so readily available to them. Fisher mentions that students can access knowledge immediately, but that\u2019s not wisdom. Wisdom grows over a lifetime (2020). In 30 years, will wisdom be obsolete from humanity\u2019s hunger for more knowledge and power?<\/span><\/p>\n
