Hello everyone!
My name is Sally Bourque and I’m taking my 5th and 6th courses in MET this semester.
I’m also working full-time as the EdTech trainer at Yukon College and finishing up a Facilitator Development Online (FDO) workshop this week. (I’m feelin’ the the pressure!) The FDO has inspired me to be courageous with introductions so I downloaded a new app a few hours ago, took a short hike and made an intro video on my phone!
The editor was neat but I COULD NOT figure out how to clip within the recording, so unfortunately you will have to sit through all my “uhms” and “ahhs”.
EDIT: I feel I should add something to my post now that I’ve actually read through the modules and see that there were specific instructions for the introduction. (oops, :s) I was supposed to select an artifact associated with one of the topics in the course and explain why I chose it. Hmmmm. I suppose an artifact that comes to mind is e-readers which I find fascinating. I’ve been experimenting a bit with digital texts (I owned a kobo a few years ago) and I’ve been using a tablet and stylus for reading and annotating pdfs throughout this program. This semester I’ve also downloaded 2 books for my other course as .mobi files and intend to read them completely in the kindle e-reader app. I’m nervous about the extra effort it’s going to take to do simple things like bookmark sections or find the index. I also feel disconcerted that I don’t really know how long or large the texts are because my brain just doesn’t compute it the same way looking at a book would. I’m worried that I won’t know how long it will take me to read a chapter and it’s going to be a little tricky to plan my time. There’s something about the familiar look and heft of a book that’s comforting; I know how I like to highlight sections or bookmark things and I know how flip through the pages and find information quickly. I do not know those things about e-readers and it feels foreign, intimidating, and a little bit exciting. 🙂

Nice to meet you, Sally! I am very much impressed! Two courses and a full-time job! That’s great! Wishing you all the best with both courses!
My colleague moved to Whitehorse a year ago and seems to be very happy up there! Great job with a video! 🙂

Hi Natallia,
I am feeling doubts about this whole 2-courses at once business but I think I will feel better after the first week. (Having the weekend to get ahead of things is essential for me.)
I wonder who your colleague is? It’s a small town, I might know him/her! Especially if they happen to work at the college.

Hey Sally,
I am very jealous of what is 10 minutes away from your home! Look beautiful out there. Like you I am also taking two classes this term and am slightly nervous about it!

It’s beautiful, but long, cold, dark winters and a very short, chilly summer. (Although, locals claim the summers used to be much nicer!)
What other course are you taking? (I’ll check your post after this, I bet you mention it there! I’m so far behind getting oriented this week.)
I’m taking ETEC 530 and wowza….not sure that was a good choice for doubling up, but I’ll see how it goes. I’ve got mad organizational skills (and mad procrastination skills) so I guess it all evens out.
Cheers

Being “courageous” is the way to good – like the video intro!
I too am doing two course, working and likely will fall prey to the distractions of summer weather!

I write (and say) that recording and sharing is video is courageous, but I feel a bit silly admitting that. However, my comfort zone is in written correspondence.
I’m thinking about the section in Module 1 titled “Thinking about Text and Technology” and the part that talks about Postman criticizing children who have grown up “…deeply conditioned by the biases of television…” The course module suggests that those students who grew up with screen based media will be more prepared for image-based multi-sequential learning environments. Perhaps if I had grown up with cell phones and tablets, making a simple intro video would feel as easy and natural as writing a paragraph.
Which other course are you taking this semester?

Acknowledgement of discomfort is definitely courageous.
I “had to” do a video intro for ADHE 327 and I must admit I was apprehensive of “can I figure this out?”
I have a 16 year old son who grew up not with television but with “on-demand” media. Just first few readings have got me thinking about the history and impact in a much different way.

Hi Sally,
Thanks for your intro video – a great way to show that orality is still a great option over text! I too am working full time and taking 2 courses together for the first time – this one and ETEC565M – and wondering if i’ve done the right thing! Good luck with your ETEC530 course!

Hi Sally! Great to see you again in another course! I’ve gone back and forth between 1 and 2 classes throughout this program. I find 2 challenging, but doable. Although I usually need to go back to 1 in the term after to recover a bit of sanity 🙂
