Hi everyone,
My name is Brad Forsyth and this is my second course in the MET program. I am employed at Thompson Rivers University in Kamloops, BC, where I grew up and completed my undergrad. I currently work in the Audit and Articulation department, primarily assessing incoming student transfer credit, among other boring sounding things. My academic background is in History and English, so I was intrigued at the opportunity to explore both the historical and current effects evolving text technologies have had on society. It is my hope that this program will help me shift career paths in higher education to an area that allows and fosters a bit more creativity.
I am an avid basketball fan, and am still emotionally recovering from another embarrassing playoff exit for my Toronto Raptors. I still play competitively and have coached in the past as well. I also enjoy golfing, hiking, reading and writing fiction. Last October I had the bright idea of surprising my girlfriend with a black lab puppy for her birthday. Fast forward about 7 months and 70 pounds, and our time is now mostly spent trying to deal with his endless energy.
I selected two pictures for my introduction, because I just couldn’t decide on one. The first is a print that we have hanging in our Registrar’s Office of the Open Learning (distance education) division at TRU, which depicts a number of keywords that exemplify the values of the office. The color, font size, and arrangement of the terms into a visual presentation reminded me of the concept of text being woven words that we have covered in our readings concerning the origins of the term.
The second picture (apologies for the poor lighting) I did not have to go far to take- it is an art piece hanging in my home called “Jungle Book” by an artist named David Fleck. As a lifelong avid reader, I really love this image as it depicts the power of literature to create vivid settings, characters, and scenes in our minds.
I’m looking forward to the course and getting to know you all.
