Rip.Mix.Feed: Experience a quiet place

Hey everyone, I made an interactive RipMixFeed incorporating audio, video, and images. This is what’s known as an e-Learning module, and what I make in my day-to-day professional life as an instructional designer/developer.

(Works best in Google Chrome…apologies for the image quality, I’ve been having issues with my server speed so needed to drop the resulotion)

What motivated you to explore the appliction(s) you used?

I use Storyline (a rapid e-Learning authoring tool) on a daily basis, so I’ve come to master it. In addition to ease of use, the program allows the creation of truly interactive and media-rich content, the likes of which is difficult to find (unless one would like to code using Javascript and HTML). Unfortunately, the program isn’t free, so I’m grateful to have access to this powerful tool.

I also used Audacity, GIMP, and Blender—all of which are open-source and free programs—to edit the content in my Rip.Mix.Feed. Audacity allows for audio editing, GIMP is an image editor, and Blender allows you to do a range of things, including green-screening, image tracking, and 3D modeling. I produced the Blender piece some time ago as an experiment.

What have you attempted to achieve in your project?

I attempted to remix a scene from my day-to-day life. While I tidied up apartment for the shot (not much, as you can tell) I aimed for authenticity: all sounds, books, toys and the like were naturally where they were; all book pages photographed were dog-eared for later reading by myself (they’re things that interested me).

Linking back to text and technology: I’ve “technologied” regular print and modified it with technology. I played with the texts by modifying them in some ways, but also the fact that I’ve selected only a single page acts as a curation for you, the experiencer.

I feel you may be able to construct a story of my life from this non-linear experience.

What are the particular affordances (for knowledge mobilization, learning, etc) of the form of production you’ve selected in relation to previous forms of production we’ve considered in this course?

This production form has the hallmarks of the digital age: Iinteractivity, and the blending of multimedia. It also affords hypertext approaches, such as “choose your own adventure” style branching narrative structures, games and the like.

What are the potential drawbacks?

Browsers can suck sometimes: certain animations won’t work properly or sounds won’t play with certain browsers.

Computers and internet connections need to be strong enough or certain parts of the experience lag or altogether won’t function.

Like any screen-based experience, it’s easy for people to start surfing.

It’s impossible to cut and paste portions of it for further Rip.Mix.Feed.’ing, unless one has screen-capture software. But then, this is a problem for other internet-based approaches as well.

It may be too novel/confusing an experience.
