Hello everyone,

I made a video on the history behind the Korean writing system, “Hangeul” and its effect on mass literacy and politics, as an homage to my cultural roots. In accordance with Bolter’s theory of remediation, Hangeul demonstrates how it was created to replace “Hanja” (Chinese characters) for the purpose of eliminating problematic Chinese script and its logographic origins. This was my first attempt at creating a 10 minute video and to say that it was challenging is an understatement. I used VideoScribe to create and edit my video. It took me a LONG time to figure out how to use VideoScribe, and I ended up starting all over from the beginning twice. The 10 minute voice recording took several hours, as my children kept interrupting me or you could hear them in the background. I found it difficult to align the timing of the visuals with my narration and for whatever reason VideoScribe kept crashing on me. Overall, being a “noob” this wasn’t an easy assignment and it took much longer than I anticipated. It is by no means perfect, but with time constraints and deadlines there was only so much one could do. I have always enjoyed watching videos created by my favourite YouTubers, but now I have a new found respect and also a better understanding and appreciation for the craft. I know now that even a short 10 minute video can take a large amount of time to plan, film, edit and put together. Although I have only touched upon the tip of the iceberg doing this assignment, I have definitely learned a lot by creating this video.

Thank you for taking the time to watch my video.

Amy
