The Story of the Scribes – A 5000 Year Journey
In researching for this project I came upon a cuneiform recipe for Sumerian beer written in cuneiform by an 18th century BCE scribe. It caught my fascination and before long I was deeply engrossed in the stories of other scribes. There is a tendency for modern people to look back at our ancestors and perceive them as simple or uninformed but this project opened my mind to the precariousness of humanity’s struggle. Without someone holding the torch of writing we would have constantly been in the dark.
The animation portion of this production was by far the most difficult part. It was very difficult to locate enough images that were free for educational use. I was turned down by networks and online authors but in the end I managed to get permission for some great animated images that helped me push through.
Frankly speaking I chose animation because I dreaded the thought of being in front of the camera and dreaded asking my friends and family even more.
In the end I thoroughly enjoyed this project and wish I could expand the documentary to include all those wonderful stories.
