Introduction – Daniel Charron

Book shelf

The picture that I added to this post was one of my personal bookshelf. When I think about text technologies, the book, is not the first thing I think about. With all of the technology surround tablets and e-readers, I am still one who wants the book. It has a certain touch, smell, and feel to it. Given the choice to read something on my computer or print it out and read it, I will always prefer to print and read. The is just something about the feel of the paper in my hands. The other reason why I took a picture of my bookshelf was because if you look at the majority of books in the shelf, there is a theme. The theme is baseball. I love to read about baseball, biographies, autobiographies, and just stories that surrounds the game. I have found my favourite subject to read. I think as educators – there needs to be an emphasis on helping a student to find a genre that they love. Reading is better where you love the topic and subject matter.

About myself.

My name is Daniel Charron. I am currently living in Kingston, Ontario with my wife Jennie and nearly 7 month old son Jude. I work for the Canadian Army as a Training Development Officer. In other words, I create curriculum for Army courses and I am an educational advisor. It is an excellent job that provides many different challenges.

This is my 5/6th MET Course. I have really enjoyed the program. There have been many great learning experiences thus far!

I am looking forward to this semester, learning more about the subject matter.

    • Hi Daniel,
It’s nice to see you again. I find it interesting how you don’t think of a book when you think about text technologies, because my mind also tends to gravitate towards tablets, computers, mobile phones, etc. I wonder if the meaning of the word “technology” I have come to know differs slightly from the definitions discussed in the first module because of the context in which I place it?

  1. Hi Rachel and Daniel,
I have to admit I’m still a book person although living in Brunei has forced me to read from my tablet due to lack of access to good literature. In a way, they are totally different experiences, and I’m glad I’ve come to appreciate both.

As for technologies, the printing press was a pretty amazing technology for it’s time no?

Rachel it’s so nice to see you in this course as I always loved reading your perspectives. You have really good insights and often forced me to look at things from another perspective. Looking forward to more of that 🙂

  2. Hey Daniel:)

I love books too and will always choose them over anything like e-books. I love that inky smell of newspapers too, ha ha.

I have only ever read one really good book around the theme of baseball. It was called The Universal Baseball Association Inc., J. Henry Waugh, Prop. by author Robert Coover. It is fiction and has a dark side, but I found the world of baseball statistics fascinating. Have you read it?
