Rochelle’s Intro
Happy Monday:)
Hope everyone is having a great start to their week! Although I am taking my 7th and 8th MET course this semester, I am really unfamiliar with blogging, so this is my first adventure!
I live in Kelowna, BC, and after venturing out in several ways (I work with ESL learners mostly, nanny, and teach yoga therapy), trying to find a way to bring them all together. As my teaching experience is with ESL learners, I really want to continue moving in that direction and currently work with Okanagan College, leading large groups of international students on cultural adventures. I am really interested in how technology is changing the way we communicate as well as what we term “communication”, which is why I am so excited about this course.
I look forward to learning along with all of you!
This is me with some of my Japanese students earlier this year:)
I also forgot to add/explain the image of my calendar. I am old school in many ways, including still using a rather large calendar to plot out my life, instead of anything on my phone. I am not sure if this is fear of change or distrust….I just like being able to see things on a larger scale maybe. Either way, it is strange to me that I organize my life around such simple text…kind of scary and a bit sad really that my actions should be so represented by squares on paper. This sure has me thinking anyway!
Thanks!
Happy Monday to you too Rochelle! Welcome.
Hi Rochelle, I still use a paper calendar with my family. It is just so much easier to coordinate and teach my 8 year old to put in activities, etc. (but then I take a picture of the calendar so I have it on my phone…). However, you make me think that maybe I should be getting her on a digital calendar sooner. Why teach her the way I was taught…hmm…
ha ha, hey Briar:) I wouldn’t worry too much, she will choose what works best for her:) I think it all just depends on comfort and how we learn best/organize our thoughts.
Hi Rochelle,
I’ve always loved writing on calendars! There is something about the large scale that is appealing and satisfying. My background is also in teaching ESL, which I did for about 18 years in Japan, Vancouver and Whitehorse, Yukon. Now I am teaching a grade 6/7 class at an elementary school. I totally LOVE it, and am so happy to be actually have my own class as I just did a BEd at Queen’s a couple of years ago. In 2009/10 when I was teaching at Yukon college, I had my ESL students use a WordPress blog, and it was a really great place for them to share experiences and photos and information. So, if you get comfortable with blogging, you might want to try that some time, or experiment with it with ESL adult learners. I look forward to this class and the diversity of our class.
Cheers,
Pam
Hey Pamela!
My apologies for such a late reply! Thank you for your comments. It sounds like you have a lot of experience in amazing places! I hope to get more comfortable with blogging…soon:)
