Video Documentary: The Overhead Projector
I thought that I would try filming myself and making a “traditional”documentary. This was by far the most difficult assignment I have done in a long time. When I started editing and splicing the documentary together I felt very self conscious. I do not like seeing myself on the screen and I especially don’t like hearing my voice. I am much more comfortable and confident when I can express myself in writing. I feel like I can distance myself from the subject matter as well as the audience when I write.
I did enjoy learning about the Chant Commission and the Chant Report. I was surprised to learn that the education system had similar challenges that we have today. Class size seemed to be an important issue in the 1960’s as it is today. I also enjoyed learning about the important world events that helped create the climate in which the overhead projector became popular.
If I were to do this project again, I would choose a different medium. It took a lot of time to learn how to use the video editing software and I felt uncomfortable with seeing myself in the end product. In the future I would use something like Powetoon or a storyboard to make video documentary.
I hope you enjoy what I learned about the overhead projector.
