Video Documentary – The Children’s Picture Book

As educators we often celebrate the process more than the product for it is through the process that the deep learning occurs.  As my children and husband sleep, I sit face to face with this screen tapping out words,  trying to depict the process of this most recent assignment, hoping that my most recent attempt of uploading an iMovie to YouTube will be successful.  It is currently at 74%.

Although it feels like last minute, I can attest that the process was percolating for weeks being pieced together in my mind and on a Google Doc. Research was completed through UBC Library resources, and through online resources, and even through the resources sitting on my bookshelves.  Good finds were tapped out into categories on a table and random brain waves were collected near the top of the extending Google Doc.  When composition of the script approached, I found some gap areas that needing filling, so the pursuit continued for tidbits to make the story of the picture book more whole.

Research and writing are my comfort zone, but iMovie has been stretching me thoroughly.  YouTube how-to videos have recently been my best friends and somehow trial and error does eventually lead to success. For this video project, I wanted to include some interesting features that I had viewed in previous student videos from this course such as background music and video clips – just something to add variety to the overall texture of the video.  As well, I snapped many of my own photos to incorporate as visuals.  In iMovie you are able to complete the voice over in sections {perhaps this is something that all movie maker programs can do??}, but this feature was essential to the effectiveness of my video.

The video’s time is a little bit over the allotment due to a little bit of story at the beginning and a little bit of poetry at the end.  I’m thinking that both spectrums are good things to have too much of.

Following is a copy of my script.  It only includes the reading as well as the bibliography.  I was working in Google Docs and organized the corresponding visuals using the comment feature, so did not include the visual cues with my Word document script.

  1. Hi Jessica,

I enjoyed watching your video! The quote from Polacco about her experiences with reading and storytelling as a child, “Of course it’s true story. But it may not have happened.” is beautiful.

“It is necessary to draw and to describe.” I loved this as it is such a crucial part of being human.

I enjoyed the “Golden age of illustration” as well, the books from that period are some of my favourites.

    Thanks Jessica:)

    Rochelle
