Link Rot – the (im)permanence of the Internet
Hi Everyone,
Here is the site for my multimedia project.
I chose the topic as I kept thinking about the early dreams of augmenting human capacity and the realities of our current web.
I made a weebly site – my first time using it. It was fairly easy to use for a novice, and while I am am no designer, I think a person can make a fairly clean page with it.
Hope you enjoy it!
Hi Mary:
Interesting topic and website design. I like the way you arranged the visual and the text. In fact, I got confused initially that I had encountered an error and then realized it was part of the design.
It’s a little scary to think that over time we might be losing valuable information digitally — in some respects I perceive (and even more so after reading your website) that printed books have more longevity than electronic information. If we lose information, we will no longer be accumulating knowledge as Ong surmises. Similar to the traditional languages we are now in danger of or have already lost. Perhaps this is what Bolter meant by culture being remediated as well.
In addition, it makes one ponder who will “decide” what information gets left behind? Or will it be a natural progression? Will commercialism rule the roost? I am concerned that we are entering an era that is controlled by large corporations and the pursuit of the almighty dollar…so will we end up with digital information mostly controlled by them? Yikes…my fear and conspiracy theories are showing.
Thanks for the thought provoking website. Well done!
