{"id":997,"date":"2015-11-21T21:09:56","date_gmt":"2015-11-22T04:09:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/etec540w2015\/?p=997"},"modified":"2015-11-21T21:09:56","modified_gmt":"2015-11-22T04:09:56","slug":"rip-mix-feed-instructables","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/etec540w2015\/2015\/11\/21\/rip-mix-feed-instructables\/","title":{"rendered":"Rip Mix Feed Instructables"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"990\" height=\"557\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Wk0Qovx6mrY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>I decided to make a cartoon about a website that I have been using in my teaching a lot lately.\u00a0 Instructables.com (2015) is a site where people can post instructions to create projects.\u00a0 It is free to use but if you want to comment, post or download PDFs you must pay a small fee.\u00a0 Professional memberships are free for educators.\u00a0 This site is based on the free and open sharing of information and improvements on design are encouraged.<\/p>\n<p>This is based on the theory of distributed cognition(Dror &amp; Harad, 2008).\u00a0 People are able to share expertise and experience to accomplish tasks that would be impossible for individuals to do on their own.\u00a0\u00a0 The use of new media and communication technologies has greatly increased the influence that distributed cognition has on our day to day lives.\u00a0 Our communities of experts used to be fairly local and restricted to people who we know and have regular contact with.\u00a0 With the use of a site like Instructables.com, we can be connected to a diverse community from almost limitless geographic locations.\u00a0 In the past, I would seek advice about a project that I wanted to do with my class from fellow teachers or people I knew in the community.\u00a0 I might even phone a friend in another city.\u00a0 Now I can share files, and get advice from experts in the field that I am interested in without worrying about the geographic or social restrictions that were in place when I started teaching.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Dror, I. &amp; Harnad, S.
