Assignment #3

One Content Module of a Course Prototype

Continue to work on your course prototype project with the same groups or individually as you did with the previous assignment. All group members will have the same mark.

Assignment #3 has four components: Design one Content Module for your course prototype, Write the Project Documentation, Publish both for a feedback, and Reflect – summarize your experience.

Design

(a) formulate learning objectives for the module, to facilitate learning;

(b) design a structural outline and learning activities for achieving the module’s learning objectives;

(c) design assessment activities related to the module’s learning objectives;

(d) design communication activities related to the learning objectives;

(e) design/reuse the pedagogically relevant media objects (graphic, audio, video, multimedia), and embed these on the module page to facilitate learning;

(f) acknowledge the authorship rights for the reused digital objects (add references to the sources of the borrowed digital objects), and assign a license type for your project, if applicable.

Write the Project Documentation

Start the documentation with the name of your organization, who are your course audience and the name of your course Module that you present for the Assignment #3.

Describe (1) the learning objectives for this module:  Describe how the module’s learning objectives are translated into the elements of instructional design. Explain the affordances and limitations of your primary LMS or the combination of platforms you draw on designing your module;

Outline (2) the types of content you used designing instruction, and explain how these elements correspond to the module’s learning objectives,

Describe (3) what types of learning activities you have designed/reused for this module to facilitate learning. Outline the role of the instructor(s) in facilitating learning of the module’s material, if applicable. Describe what forms of communication and assessment activities you have designed to facilitate optimal learning experience with this module’s material.

Explain (4) your choices with graphic design and navigation design: what alternatives or different versions have you been considering? What characteristics of your designs facilitate an optimal learning experience?

Explain (5) your choice of the license type for your project. Where on the course pages the license information is displayed?

(6) Summarize your decisions in a text document – Content Module Project Documentation. Maximum 2000 words (online word count tool).

Publish the Content Module and the the Project Documentation

(1) Make the Content Module of your course prototype available online and post your project’s URL to the Discussion forum to obtain peer feedback. Make sure that your project is not locked for the student view, locked projects will not not be marked. For the group projects: each group member should have an individual copy of the course prototype project (which may or may not be identical with the rest of the group, in a latter case, describe the reasons for having different course designs in the Project  Documentation).

(2) Publish the Project Documentation on your ePortfolio, use the designated page named: “Content Module“. For the group projects: each group member should have identical Project Documentation published on the individual ePortfolio. The links to the texts published on the media other than the UBC Word Press are not accepted.

(3) Submit the assignment #3 using the Assignment Dropbox (Bb Connect). In the submission message include the URL of your Content Module and the URL of your Project Documentation. For group projects, include the names of your peers. All group members will get the same mark. No file attachments are accepted.

Reflect

Write about your experiences with designing the Content Module, post your notes on your ePortfolio Home page (this will become part of your assignment #4).

The instructor will be using the following criteria in assessing your assignment:

  1. How well the learning objectives are translated in the module’s structure and the elements of instruction, for creating a coherent and stimulating learning environment;
  2. How well the LMS functionality and the use of external tools are implemented to achieve the learning objectives;
  3. How well the design of learning activities, communication and assessment corresponds to the module’s learning objectives, and whether the use of individual digital tools and formats is pedagogically appropriate;
  4. How engaging the learning activities are and how appealing the graphic design, the media elements and the overall look of the course content module is;
  5. Whether the navigation paths and design provide optimal user experience;
  6. Whether the project settings make it accessible to peers in this course section.
