Assessment
I decided to develop a quiz for my Planning 10 WorkSafe unit. The WorkSafe unit is one of the most important units in Planning 10 as it helps prepare the students to remain safe during their required 30 hours of work experience. In school district 41 we help place our students at various worksite locations; however, before we are able to place the students at a worksite they must complete the WorkSafe test and achieve at least 80%.
With this in mind I structured the quiz with various questions to test their learning during the WorkSafe unit and included:
- 3 True and False questions
- 2 short answer questions
- 3 multiple choice questions
- 3 short Essays (2 with embedded images)
- 4 Matching questions
Having never developed a quiz using Moodle or any LMS before I was a little apprehensive as I thought it would be difficult to structure the test to include a variety of questions that would accurately test the students knowledge. I was pleasantly surprised that Moodle had a Quiz feature under add an activity that allowed you to add a variety of questions types. I found it simple to draft the questions and embedded images when needed. However, when I embedded the images they were so large that they took up too much space and looked odd in the quiz. Knowing some html I clicked on the Edit HTML source and was able to adjust the images widths and heights so that they fit nicely in the questions.
I was able to program the quiz so that it would open up for the students to write it on November 5, 2012 at 9:00am, set a 1 hour time limit and allow the students one attempt at the quiz. I really liked the feature that allowed the questions to be automatically graded, however, the structure of the short answer questions seemed a little odd as it appears that in order for the students to receive auto marks for these questions they had to answer in the exact words that I used.
I found the feedback features very useful as I was able to provide direct feedback to the students once they submitted their quizzes and as described by Gibbs and Simpson (2005) timely and regular feedback is important for student learning. Overall, I enjoyed the assignment and found it very useful in helping me learn more about the LMS Moodle. Feel free to have a look at my Moodle quiz and let me know what you think.
