    Astronomer and mathematician Nasir al-Din al-Tusi died in Baghdad. Born in Tus in what is now Iran, he spent most of his life there before joining invading Mongols on their westward campaign toward Baghdad in 1256. More information about: Nasir al-Din al-Tusi

    Scottish physicist William Thomson, Lord Kelvin, born in Belfast, Ireland, where his father James was an engineering professor. When William was 8, the family moved to Glasgow, Scotland, and two years later, at age 10, William entered the University of Glasgow. More information about: William Thomson (a.k.a. Lord Kelvin)
