Graphic designer by day, graduate student by night. It’s a tough juggle sometimes but I’m enjoying the journey so far. Despite the challenges, balance is possible with the right mix of organization, time management and self-discipline.
My sense of creativity and imagination started from a young age and from as far as I can remember, I have always enjoyed drawing, making collages and visualizing things in a different way. The artistic personality also comes with an interest for things that are related to science, technology and learning.
My educational background consists of a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature from the University of British Columbia (UBC) and a Bachelor of Science in Interactive Arts (TechBC) from Simon Fraser University (SFU). Currently, I am pursuing a Master of Educational Technology (MET) from UBC. This graduate program is offered entirely online and my goal for completion is May 2010.
Courses
During my undergraduate studies, I took a diverse range of courses (some because I had to but mostly because I wanted to) including subjects such as Anthropology, Technical and Business Communications, Spanish, Biology, Chemistry, Medical Terminology, Information Technology, Family Studies, Foundations of Design, Experience Design, Project Management, Interaction Design, and several others.
MET Research Interests
I was first exposed to educational technology at SFU, while working as a Research Associate and also as a Technician for the Department of French where I had the opportunity to assist with some course development. Now as a graduate student at UBC, I am learning more about educational technology alongside educators, curriculum designers and other professionals from around the world.
The MET program does not require a thesis and enables me to further diversify my knowledge about the use of technology for education. My research interests include:
Communication Design
As a child, I had no idea that my magazine cutouts and rearrangement of layouts were considered design. To me, it was something fun that kept me occupied for hours on end. Another joy of mine was playing on the computer. Source of my poor eyesight. Soon enough, my creativity went from using paper to including technology and design went from an interest in playing with Print Shop to a hobby of learning about one of the earliest versions of Macromedia Flash and Fireworks.
Since then, I have had all sorts of fun designing a variety of projects and writing copy for clients. Projects include brochures, newsletters, trade show exhibits and displays, posters, postcards, reports, illustrations, logos, flyers, web design, information architecture, labels, and product packaging. Other more unique projects have included those done for charity such as creating ornaments for a Christmas tree, painting a wooden lawn chair, and painting on a car dealership window. My expertise also includes French translations (plus chemicals) as well as FDA and Health Canada product labeling regulations.
