Check the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/WAI\/quicktips\/Overview.php\">&#8220;Quick Tips&#8221;<\/a> on WAI and check your work at <a href=\"http:\/\/validator.w3.org\/\">Markup Validation Service<\/a>.\u00a0 See updated <a href=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/WAI\/WCAG20\/glance\/\">Web Accessibility Quick Tips based on WCAG 2 at a glance.<\/a> What did you find? How accessible is your site? What sorts of things might you need to do to ensure it is accessible to all of your students?<\/p>\n<h3>Reflection:<\/h3>\n<p>This toolkit activity has been very eye opening.\u00a0 I took a look at my <a href=\"http:\/\/moodle.met.ubc.ca\/course\/view.php?id=42\">moodle site<\/a> and used the <a title=\"Web Accessibility Quick Tips\" href=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/WAI\/quicktips\/Overview.php\" target=\"_blank\">Web Accessibility Quick Tips<\/a> to reflect on the overall accessibility of my site.<\/p>\n<p>Here is a summary of the points that I took into consideration:<\/p>\n<h4>1.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Images &amp; animations:<\/h4>\n<p>I used the alt attribute to describe the function of each visual.<\/p>\n<h4>2.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Multimedia:<\/h4>\n<p>This is an area where I could improve.\u00a0 The checklist recommends providing captioning and transcripts of audio, and descriptions of video.\u00a0 The next time I embed a video, I would also include a written text of the audio and a short description of the video.\u00a0 That being said, I was able to include audio files using <a title=\"Audacity\" href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/etec565maydonik\/2009\/07\/12\/audacity\/\" target=\"_self\">Audacity<\/a> to support students with the reading components of the course.\u00a0 For more information about multimedia used in my course site, please visit my <a title=\"Multimedia Inventory\" href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/etec565maydonik\/multimedia-inventory\/\" target=\"_self\">Multimedia Inventory<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h4>3.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Hypertext links:<\/h4>\n<p>Throughout my course, I endeavored to use text that makes sense when read out of context.\u00a0 I avoided &#8220;click here&#8221; and generally used text that described the activity.\u00a0 For example, on my splash page, instead of saying &#8220;astronaut&#8221;, I say &#8220;Start Here&#8221;.<\/p>\n<h4>4.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Page organization:<\/h4>\n<p>I have used headings, lists, and consistent structure.\u00a0 My course is organized around three (3) modules, A, B and C.<\/p>\n<h4>5.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Check your work:<\/h4>\n<p>I validated my site at the Markup Validation Service and it found 4 errors.\u00a0 All 4 of them were a XML Parsing Error where I had an opening and ending tag mismatch.\u00a0 The report tells you where the error has occurred; however, I am not sure how to find the specific lines and columns.\u00a0 More learning is required in this area!<\/p>\n<p>Overall, because my site is to be used with teacher support and the <a href=\"http:\/\/smarttech.com\/\">SMART Board<\/a>, I believe that my site is accessible.\u00a0 At my school, we are very focused on <a href=\"http:\/\/sites.wiki.ubc.ca\/etec510\/Universal_Design_for_Learning\">Universal Design for Learning<\/a>; therefore accessibility and differentiation are forefront in my mind when planning lessons to meet learning outcomes.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>E- learning Toolkit &#8211; Accessibility Instructions: Take a look at your LMS (Vista or Moodle) site, including images, multimedia, links, tables and frame.
