{"id":15,"date":"2012-10-16T18:53:45","date_gmt":"2012-10-16T18:53:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/etec522byod.wordpress.com\/?page_id=15"},"modified":"2012-10-27T16:59:55","modified_gmt":"2012-10-27T23:59:55","slug":"page-2","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/etecbyot2012\/page-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Benefits and Drawbacks of BYOD"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This video (1) gives you an idea of a few advantages and limitations of BYOD.<\/p>\n<p><center><object width=\"420\" height=\"315\" classid=\"clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000\" codebase=\"http:\/\/download.macromedia.com\/pub\/shockwave\/cabs\/flash\/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0\"><param name=\"allowFullScreen\" value=\"true\" \/><param name=\"allowscriptaccess\" value=\"always\" \/><param name=\"src\" value=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/SSXyfX8ABhA?version=3&amp;hl=en_US\" \/><param name=\"allowfullscreen\" value=\"true\" \/><embed width=\"420\" height=\"315\" type=\"application\/x-shockwave-flash\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/SSXyfX8ABhA?version=3&amp;hl=en_US\" allowFullScreen=\"true\" allowscriptaccess=\"always\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" \/><\/object><\/center><strong>Advantages of BYOD<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>BYOD allows for there to be a one-to-one ratio of students with many different types of technological devices. \u00a0There are several advantages for students to bring their own devices to class such as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Increasing student engagement and motivation<\/li>\n<li>Increasing the ability for collaboration and cooperative work<\/li>\n<li>Fostering problem-solving, creativity, and other 21st Century skills<\/li>\n<li>Access to information anytime and anywhere<\/li>\n<li>Creating life-long learners<\/li>\n<li>Cost savings for schools<\/li>\n<li>Allowing for a variety of ways for students to produce and present their work<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div><strong>Activity 1:\u00a0<\/strong>Now it&#8217;s your turn. \u00a0Please place a response on the Wallwisher below. \u00a0Double click to bring up a &#8220;sticky note&#8221;.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"border: 1px solid #999999;\" src=\"http:\/\/wallwisher.com\/embed\/eaimdueszr\" frameborder=\"0\" width=\"100%\" height=\"400px\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Drawbacks of BYOD<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Although there are many advantages for a school to implement BYOD, there are also a variety of reasons why many districts or schools are hesitant to do so. \u00a0They may include the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Parents may not be able to afford mobile devices or unwilling for their child to bring devices to school<\/li>\n<li>Students may forget their device at home or their charger<\/li>\n<li>Teachers now have to provide tech support and troubleshoot technical problems instead of teaching<\/li>\n<li>Teachers may need professional development to incorporate BYOD in their classes &#8211; this increases costs for a school and time for teachers<\/li>\n<li>Increased possibility of damage or theft of a device<\/li>\n<li>Equipment inequity &#8211; the brand or configuration of each device will vary and this leads to varying degree of functionality and speeds of output and performance<\/li>\n<li>The device could to lead to students being distracted and not being on task<\/li>\n<li>Harder for IT department to ensure appropriate protection and filtering of Internet content<\/li>\n<li>A school&#8217;s or district&#8217;s bandwidth may not be able to support all the devices.<\/li>\n<li>A possibility of increased cyberbullying<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Activity 2:\u00a0<\/strong>Have you had any conversations around BYOD at your school or district? \u00a0If yes, what were some of the concerns that were brought up about implementing a BYOD program? \u00a0Leave an answer on our Polleverywhere (link is found below).<\/p>\n<p>NOTE: \u00a0We used Polleverywhere to show an example of how students could use texting to answer questions you pose in class.<\/p>\n<p><script language=\"javascript\" src=\"http:\/\/www.polleverywhere.com\/polls\/LTY4ODYwODk5NA\/chart_widget.js?height=300&amp;results_count_format=percent&amp;width=400\" type=\"text\/javascript\"><\/script><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Digital Citizenship<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>As recent events such as the tragic death of BC teen <a title=\"Globe and Mail Report on Amanda Todd\" href=\"http:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/news\/british-columbia\/in-the-darkest-corners-of-the-internet-bullies-and-predators-hide-in-plain-sight\/article4650771\/\" target=\"_blank\">Amanda Todd<\/a> highlight, with the potential incorporation of more technology into schools with a BYOD program, teachers and administrators should seize every opportunity to provide a curriculum that teaches students digital citizenship.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.kdp.org\/publications\/pdf\/record\/Centennial\/Ohler.pdf\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" title=\"Screen Shot 2012-10-27 at 11.33.19 AM\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/etecbyot2012\/files\/2012\/10\/Screen-Shot-2012-10-27-at-11.33.19-AM-230x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"149\" height=\"194\" \/><\/a>Writer, teacher and cyber researcher\u00a0Jason Ohler believes that rather than assuming students should unplug from their &#8216;digital lives&#8217; when they get to school each day, as educators, we should instead be asking &#8220;students to bring their digital lives into our schools so that we can pursue these objectives in ways that are meaningful to them\u2026\u00a0helping our digital kids balance the individual empowerment of digital technology with a sense of personal, community, and global responsibility&#8221; (Ohler, 2012, p.26).<\/p>\n<p>To learn more about issues related fostering digital citizenship, take a few minutes to listen to this podcast from National Public Radio:<\/p>\n<p><object width=\"400\" height=\"386\" classid=\"clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000\" codebase=\"http:\/\/download.macromedia.com\/pub\/shockwave\/cabs\/flash\/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0\"><param name=\"src\" value=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/v2\/?i=130380236&amp;m=130384166&amp;t=audio\" \/><param name=\"wmode\" value=\"opaque\" \/><param name=\"allowfullscreen\" value=\"true\" \/><param name=\"base\" value=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\" \/><embed width=\"400\" height=\"386\" type=\"application\/x-shockwave-flash\" src=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/v2\/?i=130380236&amp;m=130384166&amp;t=audio\" wmode=\"opaque\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" base=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\" \/><\/object><\/p>\n<p>As you likely know, YouTube can be a tremendous educational resource in the classroom, but it can also be a platform for cyberbullying. \u00a0To educate yourself on issues related to\u00a0responsible digital citizenship online, you may wish to check out this\u00a0<a title=\"Curriculum: Understanding YouTube &amp; Digital Citizenship\" href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/edu\/teachers\/youtube\/curric\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\">interactive curriculum<\/a> on the subject prepared by Google.<\/p>\n<p>Another website that provides some good resources for teaching digital citizenship is\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/cybersmartcurriculum.org\/digitalcitizenship\/\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/cybersmartcurriculum.org\/digitalcitizenship\/<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Discussion<\/strong>\u00a0(please write your answer in the &#8220;Leave a Reply&#8221; box found below):<\/p>\n<p>1) \u00a0Do you agree with what was being presented in video (1)?
