{"id":8,"date":"2012-10-16T16:43:03","date_gmt":"2012-10-16T16:43:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/etec522byod.wordpress.com\/?page_id=2"},"modified":"2012-10-28T15:38:27","modified_gmt":"2012-10-28T22:38:27","slug":"about","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/etecbyot2012\/","title":{"rendered":"Welcome"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Welcome to this weeks topic of BYOD (Bring Your Own Devices). \u00a0While reading through the material, watching the videos, or participating in the activities, keep in mind how you (or your school district) could incorporate BYOD.<\/p>\n<p>You will be reading through several sections that deals with BYOD which include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Benefits and Drawbacks of BYOD<\/li>\n<li>BYOD in the Classroom<\/li>\n<li>BYOD Policy<\/li>\n<li>The Future of BYOD<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>We encourage you to participate in many of the activities and discussions questions as possible. \u00a0We believe our topic is very relevant to many K-12 schools and districts and we would like everyone to learn about BYOD through meaningful conversation and posts. \u00a0Enjoy your week!<\/div>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<h2>\u00a0BYOD &#8211; Bring Your Own Device<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/etec522byod.files.wordpress.com\/2012\/10\/byod_02.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-29\" src=\"http:\/\/etec522byod.files.wordpress.com\/2012\/10\/byod_02.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"470\" height=\"77\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>BYOD is an acronym for \u201cBring Your Own Device\u201d and in education it refers to the practice of allowing students to bring their own mobile devices to school that are capable of connecting to the school network and Internet.\u00a0 These devices include laptops, netbooks, tablets, smartphones, PDAs, e-readers, and gaming devices.<\/p>\n<p>BYOD is a relatively new concept in K-12 schools, although it is fairly commonplace amongst higher education institutions.\u00a0 Schools today are more likely to ban cell phones and similar devices then encourage them to be brought to class.\u00a0 But this type of thinking is starting to shift and interest in BYOD is increasing.\u00a0 BYOD is not only an educational phenomenon, but can also be seen in the world of business and government.<\/p>\n<p>The BYOD approach raises many questions, but many benefits are starting to be seen with schools and districts who have adopted this method of technology use.\u00a0 As you are reading through this week\u2019s presentation, keep these questions in the back of your mind:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>How do you know if a policy will work for your school?<\/li>\n<li>What do you do about the students that don\u2019t have devices?<\/li>\n<li>Will teachers accept this change into their classrooms?<\/li>\n<li>Is there enough broadband service to handle all the devices?\u00a0 If not, can your school or district afford to upgrade?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>To help launch this weeks topic and provide a real world context to our discussions, please take a few minutes to watch the following\u00a0video, which highlights the issues one secondary school is dealing with, as it considers the possibility of implementing a BYOD program:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/o279Y4u7xDc?rel=0\" frameborder=\"0\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Other names for BYOD are:\u00a0BYOT \u00a0(Bring Your Own Technology), \u00a0BYOL (Bring Your Own Laptop),\u00a0and BYOC \u00a0(Bring Your Own Computer).<\/p>\n<p>This video helps introduce why schools should start to incorporate BYOD.<\/p>\n<p><object width=\"560\" height=\"315\" classid=\"clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000\" codebase=\"http:\/\/download.macromedia.com\/pub\/shockwave\/cabs\/flash\/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0\"><param name=\"allowFullScreen\" value=\"true\" \/><param name=\"allowscriptaccess\" value=\"always\" \/><param name=\"src\" value=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/ZL4ssuCDRXs?version=3&amp;hl=en_US\" \/><param name=\"allowfullscreen\" value=\"true\" \/><embed width=\"560\" height=\"315\" type=\"application\/x-shockwave-flash\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/ZL4ssuCDRXs?version=3&amp;hl=en_US\" allowFullScreen=\"true\" allowscriptaccess=\"always\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" \/><\/object><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>References<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><\/strong>BYOD &#8211; bring your own device.
