{"id":338,"date":"2009-09-30T19:04:03","date_gmt":"2009-10-01T03:04:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/ethicsofisl\/?p=338"},"modified":"2011-03-23T21:01:45","modified_gmt":"2011-03-24T05:01:45","slug":"two-poems","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/ethicsofisl\/2009\/09\/30\/two-poems\/","title":{"rendered":"Two Poems, Part I"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>The South Also Exists<\/h3>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #888888;\">by Mario Benedetti<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>With its ritual of steel<br \/>\nits great chimneys<br \/>\nits secret scholars<br \/>\nits siren song<br \/>\nits neon skies<br \/>\nits Christmas sales<br \/>\nits cult of God the Father<br \/>\nand of epaulets<br \/>\nwith its keys<br \/>\nto the kingdom<br \/>\nthe North is the one<br \/>\nwho orders<\/p>\n<p>but down here, down<br \/>\nhunger at hand<br \/>\nresorts to the bitter fruit<br \/>\nof what others decide<br \/>\nwhile time passes<br \/>\nand pass the parades<br \/>\nand other things<br \/>\nthat the North doesn&#8217;t forbid.<br \/>\nWith its hard hope<br \/>\nthe South also exists.<\/p>\n<p>With its preachers<br \/>\nits poison gases<br \/>\nits Chicago school<br \/>\nits owners of the Earth<br \/>\nwith its luxurious costume<br \/>\nand its meager frame<br \/>\nits spent defenses<br \/>\nits expenses of defense<br \/>\nwith its epic of invasion<br \/>\nthe North is the one<br \/>\nwho orders.<\/p>\n<p>But down here, down<br \/>\neach in their hideaway<br \/>\nare men and women<br \/>\nwho know what to grasp<br \/>\nmaking the most of the sun<br \/>\nand eclipses<br \/>\nputting useless things aside<br \/>\nand using what is useful.<br \/>\nWith its veteran faith<br \/>\nthe South also exists.<\/p>\n<p>With its French horn<br \/>\nand its Swedish academy<br \/>\nits American sauce<br \/>\nand its English wrenches<br \/>\nwith all its missiles<br \/>\nand its encyclopedias<br \/>\nits war of galaxies<br \/>\nand its rich cruelty<br \/>\nwith all its laurels<br \/>\nthe North is the one<br \/>\nwho orders.<\/p>\n<p>But down here, down<br \/>\nnear the roots<br \/>\nis where memory<br \/>\nomits no memory<br \/>\nand there are those<br \/>\nwho defy death for<br \/>\nand die for<br \/>\nand thus together achieve<br \/>\nwhat was impossible<br \/>\nthat the whole world<br \/>\nwould know<br \/>\nthat the South,<br \/>\nthat the South also exists<\/p>\n<h3>The Development Set<\/h3>\n<p><strong> <span style=\"color: #888888;\">by Ross Coggins<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Excuse me, friends, I must catch my jet<br \/>\nI&#8217;m off to join the Development Set;<br \/>\nMy bags are packed, and I&#8217;ve had all my shots<br \/>\nI have traveller&#8217;s checks and pills for the trots!<\/p>\n<p>The Development Set is bright and noble<br \/>\nOur thoughts are deep and our vision global;<br \/>\nAlthough we move with the better classes<br \/>\nOur thoughts are always with the masses.<\/p>\n<p>In Sheraton Hotels in scattered nations<br \/>\nWe damn multi-national corporations;<br \/>\ninjustice seems easy to protest<br \/>\nIn such seething hotbeds of social rest.<\/p>\n<p>We discuss malnutrition over steaks<br \/>\nAnd plan hunger talks during coffee breaks.<br \/>\nWhether Asian floods or African drought,<br \/>\nWe face each issue with open mouth.<\/p>\n<p>We bring in consultants whose circumlocution<br \/>\nRaises difficulties for every solution &#8212;<br \/>\nThus guaranteeing continued good eating<br \/>\nBy showing the need for another meeting.<\/p>\n<p>The language of the Development Set<br \/>\nStretches the English alphabet;<br \/>\nWe use swell words like &#8220;epigenetic&#8221;<br \/>\n&#8220;Micro&#8221;, &#8220;macro&#8221;, and &#8220;logarithmetic&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>It pleasures us to be esoteric &#8212;<br \/>\nIt&#8217;s so intellectually atmospheric!<br \/>\nAnd although establishments may be unmoved,<br \/>\nOur vocabularies are much improved.<\/p>\n<p>When the talk gets deep and you&#8217;re feeling numb,<br \/>\nYou can keep your shame to a minimum:<br \/>\nTo show that you, too, are intelligent<br \/>\nSmugly ask, &#8220;Is it really development?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Or say, &#8220;That&#8217;s fine in practice, but don&#8217;t you see:<br \/>\nIt doesn&#8217;t work out in theory!&#8221;<br \/>\nA few may find this incomprehensible,<br \/>\nBut most will admire you as deep and sensible.<\/p>\n<p>Development set homes are extremely chic,<br \/>\nFull of carvings, curios, and draped with batik.<br \/>\nEye-level photographs subtly assure<br \/>\nThat your host is at home with the great and the poor.<\/p>\n<p>Enough of these verses &#8211;
