Biography

Hi, my name is Chris Jung and I am a 3rd-year student studying Computer Science.  I am originally from South Korea and was a mechanical engineer there. Yes, I am studying for my second bachelors here at UBC.

I was fascinated by programming in the senior year of my previous degree and wanted to study more about it, but it was too late to change my major at that time. So, I graduated with Bachelor’s in Mechanical Engineering and worked as a Mechanical Design Engineer in the semiconductor industry of South Korea. Making high-precision industrial robots was cool, but I did not enjoy the job that much. Also, my desire to learn programming and computer science didn’t disappear, but rather it grew even larger as I worked for something that I was not genuinely interested in. So, I decided to study again for something I want to learn, and here I am studying Computer Science in UBC.

The study here is difficult, but at the same time very achieving as I learn something I was thirsty for.  Now I just finished my second term here and am preparing for my first co-op as a software engineer in this fall. Since I do not have any previous experience as a programmer, I am not aiming for a particular industry or a job. Any developer job will be a great opportunity for me to learn how programmers work in professional environment.

In the future, I am thinking of studying Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence in Computer Science. As this field of study requires intensive math, I have taken a STAT course and am currently taking a MATH course to take ML/AI courses later. Hopefully I handle my study in UBC well and successfully take those courses in the future.

If you are interested in  ML/AI or CS in general, feel free to reach me for a chat. I like to discuss something I like and we can maybe build a cool stuff together!
