A Triumphant Return!

After a much-needed break, full of sleep, healthy food and other such luxuries, it’s good to be back for a clean slate in familiar territory. One thing I vowed to change for second semester was to get more involved early on. Going into first semester felt like a deer in headlights situation. There was this overwhelming horde of club VP’s and event coordinators hollering ,

“COME CHECK OUT OUR THING!”

“THIS AS WELL!”

“YOU SHOULD DO THIS!”

I was busy settling into my drastic new lifestyle, let alone finding my niche. So by the time I got seriously interested in clubs and volunteer work, papers and exams were taking up the precious time I would’ve committed.

But all that changed Wednesday, on what would become my most personally productive day yet. How did I make it happen? Well, I made a list. Lists are serious business. Important people have lists. The President has lists. So does Santa. Pretty high-class dudes. Now, what was on my list?

-Volunteer at the Ubyssey

-Volunteer at CiTR

-Gain the ability to fly

I accomplished two of three. So now I’m writing for the Ubyssey. And I’m loving it. It’s an experience so rare, yet we have it at our grasp. Like stargazing if you head out far enough, or training your dog to deal cards (I’m sure someone out there has done it). That’s why you have to take advantage of second semester. I’ve gone through the trial and error of a first time experience and now my highly adapted and improved self shall conquer the day. I’m like if Robocop fought time wasting.

Evan 2.0, now with newfound passions, clearer life goals, and heat ray vision! Because you have to have heat ray vision. How else would I make Jiffy Pop?

I didn’t have a lack of initiative. I just had a lack of knowledge about how this all works. I realize now that my leisurely Community and Arrested Development watching from September and October could have been spent getting interviews for a story, writing reviews for the radio station or simply manning the Norm popcorn stand for movie-goers.

For me, second semester is about overcoming confusion, seeking out my passions and to simply, as quoted by the great scholar Daniel Lawrence Whitney, “Git-R-Done!”

Oh, and I’m still working on the flying thing.
