What is Health Geography

Health Geography is the field of geographical studies which seeks to study the relationship between health in a place and the underlying socio-economic conditions of that place. Health geography came as a response to the traditional field of medical geography which primarily viewed diseases and morbidity in a technical framework concerned with the discrete causes of disease and its underlying distributions. Health geography seeks to complicate the notion of health and place by viewing disease within an intersectional framework that tries to take into account the underlying power structures (socio-political-economic) and social theories related to a population and relate it back to the health of that population. By analyzing health within this context it is hope that complex narratives of health can be derived to potentially identify causes or contributors to illness that are not explicitly apparent when only looking at quantifiable and observed data.
