The Purpose of Education and Schooling

Education and schooling do not have a singular purpose. Instead, it can used to fulfill multiple goals. In my perspective, education and schooling prepares students to be valuable members of both their local community and the global community at large. In order to reach that goal, students must be aware of the aspects of social justice and also become critical thinkers.

The Role of a Teacher (Why is what we teach important?)

As teachers, we must act as guides and facilitators for our students. In order to accomplish the objectives outlined above, we must introduce students to topics that go deeper than the curriculum we are obligated to teach. As a science teacher, this means connecting each lesson to issues that are broader than the bounds of the classroom. For example, instead of simply teaching the respiratory system, delve into the negative effects that smoking has on the respiratory system. Furthermore, instead of just telling them that smoking is bad, SHOW them that smoking is bad. Make learning meaningful every opportunity you get. These experiences can be something that a student carries with them as they graduate secondary school and beyond.

I try not to lose sight of the importance of qualities that lie outside of academic achievements. Adolescents need to be able to interact with peers and teachers in a positive manner. Also important are good work habits. I consider the work habit grade on report cares to be equally important as the actual mark. Based on my personal experience, good work habits translate to more success in the long run.

Don’t smoke kids.

Another role that teachers have to play are caregivers. A teacher is responsible for about one hundred students on any given day. Maintaining a student’s physical and mental well-being is an essential part of a teacher’s obligations. A teacher should apply principles of the ethics of care when interacting with his/her students. By creating a culture of mutual respect, we are able to ensure a positive learning environment for both the student and the teacher.
