  • Chapter 8 Lab Report due tomorrow, Thursday, 03-Mar-2016.
  • Chapter 9 Lab will take place tomorrow, Thursday, 03-Mar-2016.
  • Organic Debate will take place on Friday, 04-Mar-2016.
  • Chapter 9 Quiz on reactions next week on Monday, 07-Mar-2016.
  • Unit B Test on chemistry next week (exact date TBD by the end of today).

Chapter 9 Lab

Section 9.4

Class of: 01-Mar-2016.

Today we covered Section 9.4: Rates of Chemical Reactions (p. 250).

Learning Objectives:

  • Students will be able to calculate reaction rate based on the amount of products produced per unit time.
  • Students will be able to explain how reaction rate changes based on different aspects of collision theory (concentration, surface area, temperature, and catalysts).

Today we had a demo of elephant toothpaste! Check out the Wikipedia article on the subject. It’s a great resource: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elephant_toothpaste

The decay of hydrogen peroxide happens constantly at room temperature, producing water and oxygen gas, but it only happens very slowly. When you add a catalyst, potassium iodide, the reaction suddenly goes much faster and you get a tonne of foam! Your body is full of catalysts known as enzymes, which help you do lots of things in a timely manner, like digest your food.

Please work through the following review problems:

p. 256 #1-13

Section 9.3

Class of: 29-Feb-2016.

Today we covered Section 9.3: Types of Chemical Reactions (p. 239).

Learning Objectives:

  • Students will be able to identify reaction types based on their reactants and predict the products.

Please work through the following review problems:

p. 248 #1-6
