Section 11.5

Class of: 04-Apr-2016.

Today we covered Section 11.5: Nuclear Reactions: Fusion (p. 327).

Learning Objectives:

  • Students will be able to demonstrate knowledge of nuclear fusion by completing nuclear equations, listing sources of fusion energy, and explaining the process of fusion in stars.

Please work through the following review problems:

p. 331 #1-20

Bio 11: Kingdom Monera Part 4

Class of: 01-Apr-2016.

Today we covered Section CB.4: The Importance and Control of Bacteria.

Learning Objectives:

  • Students will be able to discuss the various ways that bacteria are important to the planet.
  • Students will be able to explain how bacteria can be harmful and controlled.
  • Students will be able to describe antibiotic resistance and how it can be avoided.

Did you know that the rampant use of antibiotics in humans and livestock has caused strains of bacterial “superbugs” to evolve? They are immune to conventional forms of antibiotics and therefore are difficult to treat. More often than not they are at hospitals where there are plenty of opportunities for evolution to take place in the patients being treated. Ironically, the last place you want to be sick is the hospital!

Please make sure that you review the learning objectives above!

Section 11.2 & 11.3

Class of: 01-Apr-2016.

Today we started Chapter 11: we covered Section 11.2: Nuclear Reactions: Fission (p. 307) and Section 11.3: Nuclear Power Generation (p. 318).

Learning Objectives:

  • Students will be able to demonstrate knowledge of nuclear fission by completing nuclear equations.
  • Students will be able to explain how a chain reaction can generate energy through atomic mass changes.
  • Students will be able to supply an example of a nuclear fission reactor (i.e. CANDU).

Did you know? The Chernobyl disaster was a nuclear meltdown that occurred in the town of Pripyat in the Ukraine (then was a part of the USSR). The background radiation levels are still so high after all of the radioactive materials exploded outwards that there is a 30 km zone extending in all directions from the plant where humans are not allowed, and is not expected to be safe for humans for another 20,000 years.

Please work through the following review problems:

p. 317 # 1-15

p. 323 # 1- 15

Have a great weekend!
