Class of: 01-Apr-2016.
Today we started Chapter 11: we covered Section 11.2: Nuclear Reactions: Fission (p. 307) and Section 11.3: Nuclear Power Generation (p. 318).
Learning Objectives:
- Students will be able to demonstrate knowledge of nuclear fission by completing nuclear equations.
- Students will be able to explain how a chain reaction can generate energy through atomic mass changes.
- Students will be able to supply an example of a nuclear fission reactor (i.e. CANDU).
Did you know? The Chernobyl disaster was a nuclear meltdown that occurred in the town of Pripyat in the Ukraine (then was a part of the USSR). The background radiation levels are still so high after all of the radioactive materials exploded outwards that there is a 30 km zone extending in all directions from the plant where humans are not allowed, and is not expected to be safe for humans for another 20,000 years.
Please work through the following review problems:
p. 317 # 1-15
p. 323 # 1- 15
