Monday Update

Class of: 18-Apr-2016.

Science 10:

We had our Chapter 13 quiz today! As a reminder, tomorrow will be a review period with a small assignment to be handed in before the end of class, and Wednesday, 20-Apr-2016 will be our Units C & D test.

Biology 11:

We had our Mosses quiz today! This is my last day teaching this class, so if you need anything this week please come find me in Ms. Hunt’s room, and after that send me an email (ask Mr. Wolfe or Ms. Hunt for it.)

Bio 11: Mosses Part 5

Class of: 15-Apr-2016.

Today we went outside to investigate mosses in their natural habitat!

As a reminder we will have our quiz on mosses on Monday, 18-Apr-2016!

We brought some moss back in and considered the following questions:

Bio 11: Mosses Part 4

Class of: 14-Apr-2016.

Today we discussed moss asexual reproduction and some of their more detailed features!

Please review the learning objectives below:

  • Students will be able to identify the major structures and characteristics of mosses.
  • Students will be able to describe the various ways mosses can reproduce asexually.

Some questions to ponder from class:

Bio 11: Mosses Part 3

Class of: 13-Apr-2016.

Today we discussed moss sexual reproduction!

Please review the learning objectives below:

  • Students will be able to identify the key structures involved in moss sexual reproduction and how they interact with each other.
  • Students will be able to explain the significance of water to moss sexual reproduction.

Some questions to ponder from class:

Bio 11: Mosses Part 2

Class of: 12-Apr-2016.

Today we discussed the alternation of generations feature that mosses have!

Please review the learning objectives below:

  • Students will be able to follow the life cycle of moss through gametophyte and sporophyte forms, describe the key features and structures of each stage, and explain why alternation of generations is important.

Some questions to ponder from class:

Bio 11: Mosses Part 1

Class of: 11-Apr-2016.

Today we introduced mosses and their basic structure!

Please review the learning objectives below:

  • Students will be able to place mosses within the bryophytes and describe the key features of that group, particularly that they are nonvascular.

Bio 11: Viruses Part 2

Class of: 08-Apr-2016.

Today we looked at the Lysogenic life cycle of viruses and how we can prevent or stop viral infections.

Learning Objectives:

  • Students will be able to explain the difference between a viral Lytic and Lysogenic reproduction cycle.
  • Students will be able to describe the effect of viruses on human health, and how viral infections are prevented and stopped.

Viruses are everywhere, but we have lots of things that we can do to keep ourselves healthy! Try to get enough sleep, eat right, and (maybe) exercise a little over the weekend.

Some questions we considered during class:

  1. Draw a diagram of a virus and label the parts.
  2. How is the way a virus damages its host different than the way a bacteria does?
  3. Suppose a new flu epidemic begins to spread through North America. What could people do to keep themselves safe from it?
  4. Why do you think virus epidemics typically stop instead of eliminating all human life?
  5. Why would it be more difficult to design a drug that fights viruses instead of bacteria?
  6. Why would it be more difficult to design a drug that fights viruses in the Lysogenic cycle and easier to design one that replicate using the Lytic cycle?
  7. Do you think it’s possible that a virus could be useful to humans? If so, how? If not, why not?

Please be sure to review the learning objectives to prepare for a small quiz on Monday, 11-Apr-2016. It will be on what we have covered on both bacteria and viruses.

Bio 11: Viruses Part 1

Class of: 07-Apr-2016.

Today we covered Section V.1: Viral Structure and Life Cycle.

Learning Objectives:

  • Students will be able to diagram the structure of a virus.
  • Students will be able to explain how a virus replicates by the lytic life cycle.

Please make sure that you review the learning objectives above!

Bio 11: Kingdom Monera Lab

Class of: 05-Apr-2016.

Today we covered Section CB.L: Gram-Staining of Bacteria.

DUE: Friday, 15-Apr-2016.

Attached below is the lab report we will be working with and submitting. Please review it!

Bio 11 CB.L

Bio 11: Kingdom Monera Part 5

Class of: 04-Apr-2016.

Today we covered Section CB.5: The Classification of Bacteria.

Learning Objectives:

  • Students will be able to classify bacteria based on the unifying characteristics of the eubacteria, cyanobacteria, archaebacterial, and prochlorobacteria.

Please make sure that you review the learning objectives above!
