{"id":78,"date":"2010-07-21T10:52:39","date_gmt":"2010-07-21T18:52:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/ewilliamson\/reading-list\/"},"modified":"2010-11-26T09:08:22","modified_gmt":"2010-11-26T17:08:22","slug":"reading-list","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/ewilliamson\/reading-list\/","title":{"rendered":"Reading List"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I love reading about Marketing and devour a new book or so every month.\u00a0 I also refer to my old favourites regularly, along with a variety of websites and articles.\u00a0 Here are a list of my top 10 Must Read Marketing books, along with a list of additional Great Reads.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Elaine&#8217;s Top 10 Marketing Must Reads<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Why We Buy &#8211; Paco Underhil<\/strong>l<strong> &#8211; <\/strong>Super interesting study of consumer culture\u00a0 in many different retail channels.\u00a0 You&#8217;ll be forever changed when you enter a store.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Building Strong Brands &#8211; J. Aker<\/strong> &#8211; Gotta have this one in your library.\u00a0 It&#8217;s a classic.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Made to Stick &#8211; C. &amp; D. Heath<\/strong> &#8211; Lots of great stories and examples about why some businesses &#8216;stick&#8217; and some don&#8217;t. The authors give practical suggestions on how to communicate your ideas to make the unforgettable.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Purple Cow &#8211; Seth Godin &#8211; <\/strong>Godin says that the way to transform your business is to stand out<strong>: <\/strong> be a purple cow in a field of brown and white ones.\u00a0 He gives lots of great examples and short case studies.\u00a0 This is a quick read and one I refer to often.<strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The Emperors of Chocolate &#8211; J. G. Brenner &#8211; <\/strong>A fascinating look inside one of the most intense corporate rivalries that we never hear about:\u00a0 Hershey&#8217;s vs. Mars.\u00a0 This is a great study of how the two companies are always aware of what the other is doing.\u00a0 Love the chocolate stories.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A Whole New Mind &#8211; Daniel Pink <\/strong>&#8211; Pink talks about how right brainers (not left brainers) are the future of business.\u00a0 He gives lots of great exercises and examples to work on to engage your right brain and get your creative juices flowing.\u00a0 His idea is that economic dependence on\u00a0 left brain workers will be replaced by abundance (many choices), outsourcing (Asia) and automation (robots, technology).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Positioning:\u00a0 The Battle for Your Mind &#8211; Ries and Trout <\/strong>&#8211; This one is a classic on positioning and has been around forever.\u00a0 These guys invented positioning and have changed the way people advertise. There are lots of examples about communication campaigns that worked.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Blink:\u00a0 The Power of Thinking Without Thinking &#8211; M. Gladwell<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The Tipping Point &#8211; M. Gladwell <\/strong><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\">Also Great Reads&#8230;<\/h3>\n<p><strong>The Call of the Mall &#8211; Paco Underhill<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Different &#8211; Youngme Moon &#8211; see blog post<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The Creative Process &#8211; Twyla Tharp &#8211;<\/strong> one of my favourites for inspiring you creatively<\/p>\n<p><strong>Orbiting the Giant Hairball &#8211; G. McKenzie &#8211;<\/strong> Perhaps the craziest, coolest book on the list (next to Twyla).\u00a0 This is from the former CEO of Hallmark Cards who self- published this half journal, half guide to life on not getting stuck inside the hairball of corporate life but orbiting it.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Good to Great:\u00a0 Why Some Companies Make the Leap and Others Don&#8217;t &#8211; J. Collins<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The Monk and the Riddle &#8211; R. Komisar <\/strong>&#8211; This is a parable about a guy from Silicon Valley who is now an advisor to a someone starting a business.\u00a0 He passes on some great life lessons about why you should be in business.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Where the Suckers Moon:\u00a0 The Life and Death of an Ad Campaign &#8211; R. Rothenberg<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Ogilvy on Advertising &#8211; D. Ogilvy<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Getting Things Done &#8211; D.
