{"id":100,"date":"2010-06-20T10:11:50","date_gmt":"2010-06-20T18:11:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/ewilliamson\/?p=100"},"modified":"2010-08-01T10:23:50","modified_gmt":"2010-08-01T18:23:50","slug":"100","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/ewilliamson\/2010\/06\/20\/100\/","title":{"rendered":"Nestle to Sail Amazon Rivers &#8211;  An example of direct distribution"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Interesting article this week in Businessweek about how Nestle SA has developed an innovative distribution strategy to reach remote villages on the Amazon river banks by using a supermarket barge.\u00a0 Nestle SA, in a move to head off competition with rival Unilever, and respond to emerging market consumers, will sail the barge down two Amazon river tributaries distributing to 18 small cities.\u00a0 800,000 potential consumers are Nestle\u2019s new market.\u00a0 These consumers lives revolve around fishing and they don\u2019t have time to go to the capital to buy goods.\u00a0 Supermarket purchases in these areas outpaced growth in richer areas as disposable incomes increased.<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/ewilliamson\/files\/2010\/06\/4711671806_7bd1c4628f_m.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-108\" title=\"Nestle barge\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/ewilliamson\/files\/2010\/06\/4711671806_7bd1c4628f_m.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"240\" height=\"180\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The barge will carry 300 different products, including chocolate, yogurt, ice cream and juices.\u00a0 This is an example of Nestle using direct distribution, bypassing any middleman e.g., wholesalers or distributors and selling its own branded product directly from its factory through its own \u2018store\u2019. \u00a0Direct distribution gives Nestle a competitive advantage over regional competitors who don\u2019t have similar resources e.g., transportation, inventory, refrigeration, financial to do the same thing.<\/p>\n<p>Nestle has adapted its product mix to respond to the income level of people in this area, offering smaller cheaper versions of its ice cream and milk powder.\u00a0 As many as 1 billion people in emerging markets are expected to exit poverty in the coming decade and Nestle, and competitor Unilever, want to be prepared with offerings, distribution and partnerships with local suppliers.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s an interesting and innovative idea \u2013 bringing the product to the consumer when the consumer can\u2019t easily get to you and one that we see every day in our high tech world of the Internet.\u00a0 It\u2019s interesting to consider a more low tech version:\u00a0 using a boat and river to get chocolate and ice cream to consumers.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Interesting article this week in Businessweek about how Nestle SA has developed an innovative distribution strategy to reach remote villages on the Amazon river banks by using a supermarket barge.\u00a0 Nestle SA, in a move to head off competition with rival Unilever, and respond to emerging market consumers, will sail the barge down two Amazon [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":2088,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[2236,14967],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-100","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-distribution","category-emerging-markets"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/ewilliamson\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/100","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/ewilliamson\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/ewilliamson\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/ewilliamson\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2088"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/ewilliamson\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=100"}],"version-history":[{"count":7,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/ewilliamson\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/100\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":109,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/ewilliamson\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/100\/revisions\/109"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/ewilliamson\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=100"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/ewilliamson\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=100"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/ewilliamson\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=100"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
