{"id":322,"date":"2011-04-27T14:50:37","date_gmt":"2011-04-27T22:50:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/ewilliamson\/?p=322"},"modified":"2011-07-16T17:37:50","modified_gmt":"2011-07-17T01:37:50","slug":"web-analytics","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/ewilliamson\/2011\/04\/27\/web-analytics\/","title":{"rendered":"Web Analytics"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Have you inserted the code from Google Analytics into your blog yet?\u00a0 Do you have any idea of how to interpret the data you see when you look at the<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/ewilliamson\/files\/2011\/04\/Screen-shot-2011-04-27-at-4.06.41-PM.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-329\" title=\"Screen shot 2011-04-27 at 4.06.41 PM\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/ewilliamson\/files\/2011\/04\/Screen-shot-2011-04-27-at-4.06.41-PM-150x150.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a> results?\u00a0 I&#8217;m no expert at web analytics, however, I&#8217;m a marketer and I ask a lot of questions.\u00a0 Questions about what customers want, where they come from, what they&#8217;re looking at and what they&#8217;re interested in.\u00a0 Some of this is exactly what web analytics can tell you.<\/p>\n<p>One of the best places to start learning about web analytics is Avinash Kaushik&#8217;s blog.\u00a0 Kaushik makes a great point, first off, that you really need to have a clear goal as to why you even have a website in the first place.\u00a0 Are you wasting money by just having something &#8216;up there&#8217;?\u00a0 What\u00a0 are your business goals and are they being complimented by what you&#8217;re doing with the webiste?\u00a0 Let&#8217;s assume so.<\/p>\n<p>1.\u00a0 <strong>Look at the website itself, silly!<\/strong> I love his first point.\u00a0 Before you dive into actually anlyzing the numbers, click around on the website.\u00a0 Get a feel for the company, the flow, the brand, any comments, the shopping cart.\u00a0 Bonus if you go visit the competition.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2. Traffic Sources Report <\/strong>:\u00a0 look here first.\u00a0 40 &#8211; 50% search engine traffic\u00a0 is what you should be getting.\u00a0 20 &#8211; 30% referring sites.\u00a0 Dig in and see where your customers are coming from.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3. Visitor loyalty<\/strong>: \u00a0 look now at how often and how recent your customers have come to your website.<\/p>\n<p><strong>4. Which pages are lousy?<\/strong> Look at your report to determine where people arent&#8217; spending any time compared to your site average.\u00a0 Now look at that page.\u00a0 Why?<\/p>\n<p><strong>5.
