Teaching Activities<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n

Exit Slip
\n<\/u><\/strong>Ask students what they learned that day or with their readings<\/p>\n

Graphic Organizers<\/u><\/strong>– Use this to see how things are connected<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. With the outer circles, look at the differences between to objects or topics<\/li>\n
  2. Where the two circles connect, look at how the two objects or topics connect<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Group Work<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n

      \n
    1. Ask students to write their group\u2019s thoughts on the large sheet of paper that is provided<\/li>\n
    2. Give them 12 minutes to work<\/li>\n
    3. Students need to have the following roles in their groups:<\/li>\n
    4. Recorder b. Timer c. Summarizer\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 d. Reporter<\/li>\n
    5. Debrief …<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      Jigsaw<\/u><\/strong>– students learn from each other<\/p>\n

        \n
      1. A group of students become experts in a particular topic- they discuss their learning with each other to expand their knowledge<\/li>\n
      2. Each student from different expert groups for another group and share what they learned from their expert groups with this new group<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

        Picture Sequencing<\/u><\/strong>– scaffolding for speech and different forms of writing<\/p>\n

          \n
        1. Take a set of pictures that are simple and sequential<\/li>\n
        2. Each student in the group receives a card<\/li>\n
        3. Students are not allowed to their card to the others<\/li>\n
        4. Students must describe their card to each other<\/li>\n
        5. The group will then decide which order the cards should be placed- the sequence<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

          Progressive Brainstorm<\/u><\/strong>– interactive- students share their knowledge about a topic<\/p>\n

            \n
          1. Students are divided into small groups where they receive a sheet of paper. On it there is a specific question or topic<\/li>\n
          2. Students are given about 5-10 minutes to brainstorm<\/li>\n
          3. After the time is up, each group move to the next group\u2019s table. They leave their paper behind but keep their own pen (each group gets a different coloured pen).<\/li>\n
          4. Each group adds their ideas to the next group\u2019s paper<\/li>\n
          5. This process is continued every 5-10 minutes until they all arrive back to their original places<\/li>\n
          6. After all of the groups have had a chance to write on each other\u2019s sheet of paper, each group reads their collaborated ideas to the rest of the class<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

            Questions
            \n<\/u><\/strong>Leave out paper for students to write a question on it- if they have any questions. The students do not need to write their names on it<\/p>\n

            Wonder!
            \n<\/u><\/strong>Ask students- \u201cWhat do you wonder?\u201d- build a unit \/ curriculum around the answers<\/p>\n
