Recently, the shutdown of the US government has been at the summit of global news. The government’s closure came as a result of the two senates’ inability to come to a new budget agreement regarding ‘Obamacare’. Looking at this situation analytically from a financial standpoint, the phrase “economic turmoil” comes to mind. This event has lead to the unpaid dismissal of 700,000 federal employees. Among the services severely cut back are: Smithsonian Institutions, National Parks (including the Statue of Liberty) and many federal departments. The substantial cutbacks on employees brings tremendous amount of difficulty to the departments and institutions effected as they are unable to effectively function with sufficient manpower. The closure of these notable landmarks and tourist attractions, including the Statue of Liberty and the National Zoo among many others, will take its toll on the revenue streams that these US monuments bring in. Passport renewal and visa processing have been terminated; the average citizens of America are being impacted. As each day passes by the incremental damage to the US economy adds up. If the US government continues to be inactive, can the economic problems from the United States begin to significantly affect us across the border in Canada? We will continue to eagerly wait and see.
