Who am I?

My name is Ranya, and I am a 4th Applied Animal Biology student with the University of British Columbia.

Why this blog?

I have created this blog as an assignment for the APBI 315 course: Animal Welfare and the Ethics of Animal Use.

However, throughout the past years I developed a passion for animal welfare and I am really excited to share some of the concepts that I have learned throughout my education.

What is the goal of this blog?

Many animals nowadays, including our farm companion animals, are suffering in silence. As animal lovers yourself, I am sure that you want to do your best to increase their wellbeing and it can be challenging. One key way to know if your companion farm animal is suffering is to observe closely its behavior, and that will help you determine the next steps you would need to take for improved welfare. This blog is here to give you some information about the causes and welfare implications of stereotypic behaviors in farm animals. Hmm what? what is stereotypic behaviors? don’t worry I will tell you all about it in following pages!

My goal is to ensure that you have a good understanding of what stereotypic behaviors are and how to prevent them if you own a farm animal!
