Stereotypies and Innate Behaviors

Drawing the line between abnormal stereotypic behaviors and natural innate behaviors can be challenging sometimes, as some natural behaviors also involve a sequence of events and do not seem to have a well defined purpose. Below is a comparison between both types of behaviors.

Similarities:

Information retrieved from Mason (1991) – please open references for more details.

Differences: The key way to differentiate between innate behaviors and stereotypical ones is to see how much negative effects does the negative behavior have. If the negative effects overweight the positive ones, then the behavior is stereotypical (Mason, 1991)
